Opeth have accomplished more, as in they have more albums out and they have acheived more progression and they have impacted more people and their music has more variety of emotions, the have a wider range of dynamics in their music...

sorry, that's not something you can quantify. Unless, of course, you make up some arbitrary, unimportant criteria and judge based on that. Then again, you can soundly argue ANY band is more accomplished than another doing so.

My solo black metal project "Orgies Including Goats" is more accomplished than The Beatles for example in that I have vastly more body hair than they do/did.

(Then Normand L'Amour (who released over 80 albums) is more accomplished than Jeff Buckley)

2) More progression = more accomplished
Would you say that Green Carnation is more accomplished than Iron Maiden? I wouldn't.

3) More popular = more accomplished
Pardon the cliché, but then Britney Spears must be more accomplished than say, Dead Can Dance.

4) More variety/dynamics = more accomplished
Then, Estradasphere is much more of an accomplished band than Radiohead i.e.

i really hope you guys don't think esoteric is more worthy of a listen than opeth. seriously, if you listen to one of their albums for more than once a week or two weeks, you get tired of it. and that really isn't a good thing. i am not listening to opeth as much as i used to in the past, but i enjoy it a whole lot more when i do put it on and want to listen to a song like blackwater park or when again after i hear it once. that never happened to me with esoteric.

when have i said my tastes are better than anyone else's? i guess you are confusing me with some other people in the forum. and also, i really do guess that the majority of people here rarely listen to esoteric. i have been listening to the band for about 7 years and i have some idea about how much people can handle something of that sort through talking to other people as well. the reason why esoteric is being mentioned alongside opeth in a thread of this sort has to do with something else. and i am pretty well aware of what that is.

In this post, you may not have explicitly said your tastes were the only ones that matter, but if you really think that Opeth SHOULD be a more worthwhile band to everybody and not just yourself, then you obviously believe that your tastes at least matter a lot more than everyone elses.
