Opeth vs Lowkey - Melinda's Beef

if people express their opinion on rap, it doesnt make them narrow minded.

And so what if they are? If they want to be, thats fine. Why is there this constant thing of calling someone narrow minded just because they say they dont like something? Its retarded.

And the song: Awful. Rap / Hip hop: Also Awful.

'I'm weightless now, in Mother Nature's imagination
Escape the status of carbonite preservation
I occupy lunar bases in moon craters
They shield me from meteor storms and new dangers
Cosmos, conquistador crusaders
And space age sabre-tooth tiger suit slayers
Explore the dunes, we move with the spice minors
Beside science, black holes and white giants'

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN? What the hell is a sabre-tooth tiger suit slayer?
It seems that whoever wrote the lyrics has been inspired by the Dune books. In particular book 3, Children of Dune. The sabre-tooth tiger, still suits, spice miners, etc will make sense once you read the books. However the carbonite line is NOT from Dune. I think it's from Star Wars 5 & 6. I'm not going to comment about the poetic qualities though. *cough* *cough* ;)

OT, but Lucas stole a ton from Dune, so it's not all that surprising. Maiden did a better job with the whole Dune thing anyway... Yep. Nerd.

i'm not saying that having an opinion something means you're narrow minded... i'm saying not like something coz you've generalised and grouped all rap under a completely wrong heading is narrow minded...

and as for what's wrong with being narrowminded?

you're a prick... i don't know you, but i'm gonna say you are anyway... no evidence to back it up, cunt, but... there you go!

See, what you've done here is come on here and present a song that, even from a hip-hop perspective, isn't that great. People say they don't like hip-hop, and you call them a narrow-minded cunt? Come on dude. This is the Opeth board, did you expect a lot of support for this?

Name-calling isn't helping your cause either.

stop making excuses for pissing people off by trying to pretend it was irony.

Why am I a prick because i stated that i dont care if im narrow minded? Its a human trait, deal with it.

Also, anyone got a giant 'WARNING: THIS IS AN OPINION' flashing banner image? May be useful in the future.

It's amazing how limited people's taste in music is. I would expect, at least from people who listen to Opeth, to be fairly open to nearly anything out there. Evidently, I was wrong.

Metal is a unique genre in the fact that it can introduce you to musicians who have a wide spectrum of musical taste. They incorporate their influences to their music, and mix a unique blend of rock, metal, classical etc.
Typically, that's what opens the listeners' minds even further, and presses them to pursue other forms of music that their favorite musicians are inspired by.

Metal is also unique because once it does broaden the listener's tastes in music--very mildly it seems--they remain stagnant. In other words, most metal heads are very limited, and close-minded in their music. I've never heard people so hostile towards a genre (hip-hop) as I have in the metal community. Which is a shame, because in the end, metal is no different than hip-hip: most of it is underground and obscure, the good stuff that is, while the majority of it sucks immensely.

Majog, if you were serious at all in your posts, go crawl under a rock. You're a prime example of the typical metalhead. Posting Cannibal Corpse lyrics doesn't help you look any better.

Personally, the re-mix wasn't that good, even though his word flow was solid. There's a lot of good hip-hop out there, you just have to look for it. And I would agree that UK rap has a lot to offer.

EDIT: Though, Majog, you do provide some entertainment with those posts.

Guitarmaster, I usually like your posts but this one....ehhh. Basically what I got out of it was you giving reasons NOT to hate hip-hop by comparing it with metal. Don't get me wrong, I know what you mean - through Opeth, I started listening to bands like Camel, or even Ark (which I had written off as just another wanky power metal band)...and I like it!

But guys reading poetry over a canned drumbeat? I'm sorry. I can't do that. I really just hate listening to hip-hop....just like I hate listening to Weird Al Yankovic. And trust me, I've heard all the stuff that people say I NEED TO HEAR when I say I don't like rap.

Really, it's great to be open-minded, but what can you say when someone says, "I don't like rap/metal/opeth/whatever"? I mean, if they've been exposed to it and aren't just writing it off for no reason, then that's that. My roommate hates Porcupine Tree....but I can't do shit about it. :(

The old "HAHA UR STUPID, I WASNT BEING SERIOUS" ploy.

I agree. To Tame a Land is great. Blind Guardian also did decent song inspired by Dune.

Yup. I'm a nerd and I'm proud of it. ;) Seriously, if you want to read one single sci-fi book in your lifetime, read Dune (don't watch the movie/tv series).

Yeah. Dune is one of the all time greats!

What BG song? Why don't I know this?!

Guess what...it's me. Yes my posts were a joke, I'm surprised some people took me seriously. I was partly surprised by the aggression towards hiphop, as Opeth were a band I thought encouraged open minded listening.

I respect the fact that people dislike hiphop. However, when is really good, thought provoking hiphop ever given radio time? It's the same deal with metal, all the bands that we think shouldn't be popular seem to be. Metal = Slipknot, Metal = Linkin Park, Metal = Disturbed. See what I mean?

Hiphop may not be to everyone's taste, especially when lots of people here listen to all sort of progressive stuff, which hiphop certainly isn't. But there is some truly inspired and talented hiphop out there, and even if people dislike it stylistically I don't see why they should assume it has no creative merit. Some rappers have some really incredible lyrics that can make you think and feel. Tell a story. Lyrically it has the edge on metal hands down, but then again both genre's are very different as metal doesn't seem to be about the lyrics, but the riffs. I'm rambling now, but all I'm saying is that maybe any curious people here might want to check out some decent hiphop. It's not all 50 cents and Snoop Dogs in hiphop and if you scratch beneath the surface you'll realise they are not respected artists of a discerning hiphop fan.

Oh and the remix does suck. But seriously check out...Yungun, Jehst, Taskforce, Phi Life Cypher, DJ Format, Life and Braintax. All good stuff, all British as well.
