Opeth's accoustic parts... Fingerstyle? or picked?

just wondering what you guys think... i think some of it is fingerpicked and other times they actually use a pick... but i could be way off... sometimes i hear the soft attack of fingers and other times it seems much more articulated and harsh like that of a pick... i dunno. I've tried playing the parts with and without a pick and so far both ways i have certain problems heheh Chris you might now since you are Mr. Accoustic coolness of life hehe.

I'd say a good percentage of the acoustic parts are fingerpicked yet there are a few that are definitely picked (easily distinguishable by the sound of the harder attack).

Hmmm... I kinda wondered this myself. Some stuff you can tell is finger-picked by looking the tab (assuming it's at least somewhat accurate), like the lead parts of Madrigal, for example. Other stuff, like the acoustic parts in the second half of Black Rose Immortal it seems could easily be played with a pick.

Hearse and Soul Forlorn would be the experts on this one...

I've seen Mikael finger-picking most of the acoustic parts (if not all) on stage. You can see that on the bootlegs as well I guess.. I always finger-pick anyway on those parts.. guess I can't use the pick pretty good

Just to make everyones heads explode, maybe they use both at the same time!!! Y'know, hold the pick w/thumb & index, and use the Middle & Ring fingers as well.

Yeh that's called 'hybrid picking' I hear that at some places in the recording, but when they play live Mike spends a lot of time with his pick in his mouth while playing the clean parts.

It's pretty funny to watch, he grabs it back out real quick and hits the distortion and POW it'a full in your face again!!! yeah!!
