What in your opinion is the best environment and/or condition to record mic'd guitars through cabs? Just normal rooms with furniture, isolation booths, etc.
I have seen Chimaira and Darkane both recording guitars with about 4' tall walls all around the cab.
So I thought putting it in my vocal booth would help. Andy said get it out of the booth.
So I listend to him and a few others that basically said to put it in the middle of the room.
I hung carpet on 70 percent of my walls since I cant afford to properly sound treat the room and then relied more on mic placement, amp settings, and overall volume.
I have been putting my Marshall 4x12 with Vintage 30's in the middle of my 8x12 room. Then stick my SM57 at the bottom right of the speaker strait at the outside edge of the center cone.
Then I make sure the volume is nice and loud to get speaker movement.
I just started doing this on the last band I recorded and thats been working way nicer for me than any of my previous attempts at recording guitars.
I have seen many guitar cabs being professionally tracked just sitting in the middle of a small or large room and the tracks sound great.
I believe auralex.com has some audio files that show a standard bedroom size room with guitars, bass and vocals being recorded. It goes through each step starting with no treatment, then various walls or foam kits.
It makes a huge difference when taking out the room reflections, air or distance you might here in the guitar track.
Then it's totally up to the gear, performance, mic technique etc.
