OT: Are you picky about your 'brand new' purchase really being so?

When you purchase something that is advertised as 'brand new', do you hope that the product really has not been touched or opened by another human being before (except for assembly line staff of course)?

Or do you not care as long as it is working, and under warranty?

this is actually a big pet peeve of mine, and after being burned more than once i now inspect the box and seals before leaving the store. and anyway, even if it's taped shut i inspect things closely and if there is any evidence that it's been opened before i return it right away.

Its not what I got, its my purchase ethos. I got into a bit of a misunderstanding with the manager of a PC parts store regarding the difference between 'brand new', 'refreshed' and 'refurbished'.

My suspicion is that the store sells 'refreshed' items as brand new, and to some, I am considered anal for making such a huge fuss over 'brand new' versus 'refreshed'.

If I pay 'Brand New' prices, I want brand new stuff. The same applys if it's a sale item, unless it is stated as a 'B-stock' or recon/refurb item I expect it to be untouched.

I learnt my lesson when I bought my C-port from an Allans music store in Melbourne a few years back.

I took it home, started setting it up but something was missing from the box..... the installation and software cds. I called the store and told them, and they couldn't even find the CDs (luckily everything I needed was downloadable). I figure they probably had the thing set up in the store at some stage. Lame... especially if I want to sell it.

You mean to say you didn't claim your money back and set the store ablaze? I would of flipped completely, man.

The Schecter that I bought was a floor model. I wasn't overly fussed since it was the only one I could find available in all of Melbourne. I mean, good care had been taken of it so there's no fuss. I mean if I got it in 11/10 MINNNT condition I'd be even MORE neurotic about not damaging it.

Same here, pay the "new price" and get a new piece of equipment, period.

However, I am very happy to buy things used on eBay that are "barely used" as long as the seller provides large, clear photos and a detailed description of use and wear. Picked up a Radial J48 Active DI box on eBay last week in "barely used" condition for $125 and I've been very happy with it!

Any eBay seller who says "new in box," provides only stock manufacturer photos, and has sold me something that has obvious signs of previous use gets negative feedback from me, regardless of how "good" of a deal it may have been.

There was one time where I went against my own policy (totally by mistake) while selling a couple of crappy Coffin Cases I got from an endorsee for free. The buyer discovered (to her horror) that the inside of of these cases had some deterioration in the upholstery. This wasn't from use (this was a brand new case!) but from poor quality materials - I had the cases in my closet for 6 months before selling them, and in that time, whatever minimal air quality and temperature factors exist in my smoke-free, temperature controlled condo had eaten away at the inside of the cases!

I refunded the buyer half the price she paid for them and she was happy. I learned that I need to thoroughly inspect anything I sell!

i bought an orange AD140HTC last year and i remember walking out of the store with literally just the amp and no papers or nothing with it thinking what the hell did i just do, it couldnt have been brand new as claimed. it just didnt feel brand new. i dunno
