if you got a cool outboard compressor, track it

i've been having good luck with emulation of 1176 and others tho!

just make sure you have a nice EQ somewhere in the chain, after all it is DIRECT bass.

looking for some crunch? put a tube screamer on the bass before the great river. =)

What EQ do you usally go to ? just something in the box like SSL channel?
I'll have to give this a try

sometimes i just use the nuendo eq, i drop 400 and 800 hz at -24 db with a q of 12
