Completely off topic: had a discussion recently with a friend, now I´d like to know what you think: if you (non-Germans) think about Germany, what is the first thing that comes to your mind ? Most of you will probably say Accept, Scorpions, Helloween etc. So let´s say "what comes to your mind besides music" ?
Thanks

Oh well Beer and Hitler ... honestly and the Mauser Rifle ..I would love to own one of those Old Old Mausers(sp) But I tend to think about the war stuff because its History and I enjoy that kind of thing Other things I think of is the Impact the Berlin wall had when it came down both positive and negative .... hahaha I watch alot of history channel hahaha Does that answer the question :D

BMW, Mercedez-Benz, Porsche, beer, sauerkraut, Hitler, Marx, Freud, Einstein, U-boats, Red Baron, BASF, Nosferatu, Vampyr, Caligari, Golem, the Berlin Wall (no longer there but I'm old).

I know Germany is more much more than simple things or dark history, but the mind tends to reply differently for different people when call on cue.

Cologne's cathedral a beautiful example of high gothic architecture, the monorail in Dusseldorf an early 20th century example of high engineering, Haber-Bosch procedure for synthetic ammonia first industrial procedure using high-pressure, Von Braun was the true developer of rocket science regardless of the use at the beginning. And please let's not forget Germany contribution to arts.

Oktoberfest!! :D as well as the above mentioned. I would love to talk about the architecture but have never been there, I could say great things about the beer, but I don't drink beer. Someday I want to go and see all the beautiful castles, wineries, cathedrals, museums and but of course those long haired guys of Symphorce!

JonnyD, I used to have an old Mauser rifle when I lived in FL. damn thing had quited the kick to it.

Many nights of constant drinking at the either the MASH or the Hard Rock
Cafe in Pirmasens, going to the wine fests in Dahn and Bad Durkheim, Getting
wet and muddy all the time because I was constantly out in the field with
my Hawk missle unit I was stationed out in the middle of nowhere between
Salzwoog and Fishbach and at times had to hike down a trail and one time
I had to climb a tree cause I was chased by a boar! Going to record stores
to buy Destruction, Sodom and Helloween cds and other metal cds having oh
I dont know 4 girlfriends in 2 years over there hahaha! That and the other
fine european countries I have traveled to many fine memories I want to

Yup, for the moment even in Turkey I think ;)

What do I think when I hear Germany ???

Volkswagen, WW 2 , Berlin Wall (I have a little piece of it) , Wurst , Bollendorf & Bitburg beer, Keep it true Festival , Grandma, etc......

A lot of my barracks mates used to call that beer Shitburger's but I liked
that beer. If you ever get a chance get some Parkbrau Perminators just make
sure you wear a seatbelt on your couch after drinking a few of them.

Kinder Eggs! My wife brought a bunch back with her a few years ago and we had too much fun with those. I haven't really looked to see if they're available here but if they were...

That and I'm mostly Dutch/German. I'm a mutt but I still love my brats and kraut. :D

Thanks, some interesting comments !
Looks like most (US) people first think about WW2 and everything related to that. Also the Berlin wall.

Beer, sausage and cars is not a surprise. But one comment. Our beer is not warm, it is just the right temperture to taste the flavour. If you drink beer ice cold you can not really identify the taste. So you Bud drinkers better keep on drinking your beer ice cold .... ;)

Regarding art and architecture, I just learned myself that Berlin is becoming a world center for art. However, to me that was surprising that some of you mentioned art. Cool.

Von Braun, Bosch etc. Wyvern, you are an engineer, eh ? I guess this is a big part of what makes us pretty proud of ourselves.

Oktoberfest ! Yeah, who has ever been there is impressed. If you like it or not. You meet people from all over the world. I live in Munich, so I am there every year of course. :headbang:

Kinder egg "Überraschungsei" - you won´t get it in the US I think. As far as I know, in the US it is not allowed to combine food and non-food, like the plastic toy in the choclate.

I was surprised to get no comments about Iraq. So Germany not taking part activly is not such a big deal in the US, as they make us believe here.
Also I expected some comments about Germans having no humor, far to disziplined and so on.

Anyway, Thanks.

I just figured there would be too much packaging involved. All the warnings about choking hazards and such so that they could avoid the lawsuits. :D

Iraq is a tough issue no matter how you look at it. Germany *is* playing an active role. They are taking part in training the Iraqi police. I think that for a country who disagreed with invading Iraq to play a part in getting that country back on its feet is one of the coolest things I've seen happen. Rather than dwelling on the politics of the situation Germany is doing something to help the Iraqi people. That's how it looks to me anyway.

The lighter colored beers are served chilled in Germany, and a few lagers especially draught are even served a little colder. More of the dark beers are served a little warmer, but ideal temperature for most beer is 50-55 deg C with porters etc. from between 55-60.
Believe it or not, some Americans do not drink crap like Budweiser (though I will for free, as it's not "bad" just rather boring.) I do enjoy German beer, though I more often buy American micro brews or Belgian ales.

I am not very interested in art (as in paintings) but as far as architecture, Germany is certainly a wonderful country full of ancient castles and churches. The Cologne Cathedral is magnificant.

Von Braun, Bosch etc. Wyvern, you are an engineer, eh ? I guess this is a big part of what makes us pretty proud of ourselves.

Cool !! I have never been to Germany during Oktoberfeast, though I was at "The Feast" in Ghent Belgium. Certainly that is much smaller. I would love to go to Oktoberfest though. SOunds great.

My experience with German food is mostly from German "style" restaurants in the US, but I love rham shnitzel. I would also love to know the secret on how to cook roast beef like The Germans (saurbraten) where it can be cut with a fork. As far as sausage, my favorite is smoked sausage with cheddar and jalapeno'. I think that is mostly an American creation.

I was surprised to get no comments about Iraq. So Germany not taking part activly is not such a big deal in the US, as they make us believe here.

I find Germans to have good humor, and also typically to be pretty good at English and understanding "American style humor." Disciplined..... yes, absolutely. I don't think it is only Americans that believe that. German machining is known to be the most precise in the world. German musicians believe in being very accurate and precision seems to be very important.

Anyway, Thanks.

As far as cars, a classic Karmann Ghia pops into my mind when I think about germany, though the Italians influenced that as well. I love classic VWs.
I do think about bands because two of my favorite bands in the world are German, namely, Accept and Vanden Plas. I was fortunate enough to meet the guys from Vanden Plas and they are very nice guys. Stephan Lill (guitarist) and Gunter Werno (keyboardist) were very nice guys.
I think the power of the internet allows people to get to know people from other countries and other cultures and that is a good thing. Certainly Germans and Americans are some different, but we are all human and we have more in common than we have differences and I think that is true for people of any culture and country.
