Has anyone ever read Thomas Kuhn's "Scientific Revolutions" or at least studied it? He describes scientific paradigms, i.e. models, throughout history and how you cannot compare things such as Aristotelian science with, say, Newton's mechanistic science, or that with 20th century science for a variety of reasons.

And although it has been said before--I'm sure--this applies to each Katatonia album (at least from BMD to VE). The albums are incomparable: the closest you can do is state which you find suits your tastes better. I don't think it's possible to say that one album is better than another. DO might seem simple and lacking in musicianship compared to others (well, I don't see this), but it has qualities that make it so different from the others that makes it a top album in its own right. Same goes for TD and LFDGD and VE.

There is no objective comparison between them (unless you feel like going into the quality of production, but that's not the issue here).

Sorry, had to get that out. Blah.

mmmh, i wouldn't say they are incomparable; in fact, we could pick an aspect and, on the basis of that, look at the evolution, and that would make perfectly sense, imo.
but yeah, if you mean comparing katatonia albums with the aim to choose the best one, i agree with you, it would be indeed a bit senseless.

on another note, if i remember correctly kuhn states we can't compare different scientific doctrines 'cause each springs out of a conceptual revolution, which i think is a bit too much for an album, even if it's katatonia we're talking about ;)

Yeah, that's what I meant. And yes, Kuhn does state it that way,and yes, the analogy is a bit extreme :) but it's what I thought of ha! :D
