While in Aspen, CO this past weekend, I was quite amused at the ski scene - especially where Aspen is a place to show you have money. Yes - people were there to ski. But they also wanted to parade themselves - who looks the best & has the most money (not me - my trip was free). We have skiing here in the northeast USA, but Aspen is a place where the "elite" seem to go (elite=$$$ for this discussion)

I spent as much time people watching as actually enjoying the scenery. Fur lined hats & coats, men with long fur coats, etc. There have also been many threads here about the "goth" look, and dressing in all black, etc. Is there any difference between "dressing up" rich like the rich skiers I saw, or "dressing up" goth when money isn't being showed? Is dressing a thing of expressionism - a way to "show off" the inner you? Is it all a parade?

I don't work too hard at dressing myself - not a lot of thought when I buy clothes. I don't go to Hot Topic, or specialty stores. I buy jeans, slacks, plain button shirts, etc. I look like the "masses". Boring me.

I guess I couldn't tell the difference if the skiers were wearing clothes to protect themselves from the cold, or to show off. I know it's a mix - but what is most important? It just seemed that people were just as interested in showing off.

Am I over analyzing, or is dressing up one of the key ways people "show" themselves to others?

good to have you and these threads back!!!

Dressing up has many many different purposes. Goths do it to show off how different they are. Rich people wear their suits to show off how proffesional they are. Metal people wear their metal t-shirts to show where they belong. etc .etc And yes money is one of those things that people choose to show off, since so many people value money then so many people are going to show it off if they have it.

I personally wear whatever, i dont like change, so i just buy clothes that are the same as ive always worn, i like to be fairly neat (i dont wear ripped clothes, or dirty or old clothes out in public), i always do my hair before going out and whatever. Yet i dont care what clothes im wearing. I think its about looking 'normal', i dont want to be seen as messy, i dont want to stand out, i dont want to asign any 'im so cool' type image to myself either. So yes i think all clothes choices have a large portion of "showing off the inner you". It makes me happy when people realise i dont care about what i wear, which in a way means i do care about what i wear. hm.

I guess in my case i dont nescassarily want to show off anything, but i want to make sure i DONT show off some things.

I think it all depends on the person's purpose. When the smell of money is in the air, people tend to be showy. Since you were at a place where many people were the "elite," it would be safe to say that people are going to try to outdo others in "wow, look at how that dude's dressed, he seriously has money." Since you went for free, that may also have shaped your ideas. I'm sure most of those people paid good money to be there, and they also want to reflect this with their dress. Now dressing up goth I think is an entirely different thing altogether (maybe not, as you'll soon see). An adult would see it as "rebelling," or, "depression." More often than not, this is true. Now I'm not saying that ALL goths are like this: some are very self confident people who just love the music and/or the goth style dress. But speaking as an example, myself, when I was a young girl, I cut up my pants into shreds, punked my hair up, and basically looked like the outcast of the school. Did I do this on purpose? Definitely. Because #1, I got attention, even if I would tell myself, "I don't care what people think," but just the fact that my rebelling was getting me attention, that's all that mattered. And #2, I was searching for identity/individuality (but the attention was the main thing, I'm sure). When you dress goth, you get noticed, no two ways about it. And now that I said this, I can see where you're seeing the connection between the Aspen people and the goth people. But I think the connection ends at the "getting attention" point. Every goth is different of course, but there's a line in the middle, with the Aspen side being "to get noticed because of money," and the goth part being "to get noticed because of uniqueness/difference/individuality, or simply to get looks/much needed attention, or simply because they LIKE the look.

One thing to add:

Some people buy clothes because they like the looks - not thinking of what others may think.

Some people buy clothes to "show-off" - parade if you will.

I am of the former type. So for me, dressing isn't a way for me to show myself to others. What Demonspell says is of course true - clothes are an extension of the self. But what self is it? Mine is not of illusion - maybe only practicality. Need something to cover up my assets :D .

Guys, you should see my clothes. I change up ALL the time. I can wear a button down plaid long sleeve cotton shirt with blue Levis and a red bandana on my head and reebok sneakers and mismatched socks on my feet one day, and the next day I'll be wearing all black leather with my Hot Topic platform boots, black liner on my eyes, and all my silver rings and chains. With me it depends largely on my mood what I'm going to wear. If I want to feel sexy one day, I wear the black leather. If I want to be comfortable, cotton is the way to go. If I'm happy, I'll wear a skater long sleeve shirt with wide leg pants. I'f I'm sad, I just pick whatever, even if it doesn't match (try formal purple suede pants with grey long sleeve cotton shirt with a tiny pen mark on it..:err:

Showing off by keeping your self hidden in clothes?

I personally like to show off by going around naked whenever possible. I have a good body and a huge, well nevermind, so that is how I show off.

Keep the clothes! :D

Don't ever say naked, good body, and HUGE in the presence of women...they tend to get involuntary salivating syndrome..... *ouch, bad Jannet..yer married, bad Jannet...* Well, I DID say involuntary :D

Welcome back! Had some fun watching the locals (actually, the moneybags) did ya, eh? :D

When I went to Copper Mountain area, I didn't so much notice the dress as being showing off. I noticed it as more of a group thing. What I mean is it looked to me like the skier's gathering. Then again, what better place than the Rockies!

I don't wear certain things to show off or surprise people. And besides, if you want to be surprised, you'll have to get to know me personally rather than just taking a look. ;)

Yeah, like those shirts that some girls wear that say "FLIRT"/"HOTTY"/"PRINCESS" with those rhinestones all over them.

"Like a ghost in the corner..."

These shirts are just beyond me. I don't see how anyone can be so immodest and pretentious as to wear this bullshit. The "Angel" and "Princess" varieties make me laugh the most.

and I despise goths.

Haha me too! Goths are annoying- "I have no friends, and those 20 people I hang out with are not friends, because I don't have any. I just hang out with them". That seems to be what the whole Goth thing is like.
I dress simply. Target stuff mostly, but the occasional metal shirt. The most "metal" I look is if by chance I happen to choose black jeans and a metal shirt on the same day. I am comfortable with who I am, so I don't need to get all metal everyday or dress like a fucking goth.

Geez - sorry. I just found it amusing that people seemed to care so much about their appearance. I apologized in my original post for over-analyzing, but never being in a "rich" ski environment before - the "dress" thing really stood out.

And you can think anything of me you please - sounds like you're over-analyzing.
