While in Aspen, CO this past weekend, I was quite amused at the ski scene - especially where Aspen is a place to show you have money. Yes - people were there to ski. But they also wanted to parade themselves - who looks the best & has the most money (not me - my trip was free). We have skiing here in the northeast USA, but Aspen is a place where the "elite" seem to go (elite=$$$ for this discussion)
I spent as much time people watching as actually enjoying the scenery. Fur lined hats & coats, men with long fur coats, etc. There have also been many threads here about the "goth" look, and dressing in all black, etc. Is there any difference between "dressing up" rich like the rich skiers I saw, or "dressing up" goth when money isn't being showed? Is dressing a thing of expressionism - a way to "show off" the inner you? Is it all a parade?
I don't work too hard at dressing myself - not a lot of thought when I buy clothes. I don't go to Hot Topic, or specialty stores. I buy jeans, slacks, plain button shirts, etc. I look like the "masses". Boring me.
I guess I couldn't tell the difference if the skiers were wearing clothes to protect themselves from the cold, or to show off. I know it's a mix - but what is most important? It just seemed that people were just as interested in showing off.
Am I over analyzing, or is dressing up one of the key ways people "show" themselves to others?
