december 13, 2002: i saw symphony x at the pound in san francisco and blind guardian was supposed to headline but their tour vehicle broke down up in washington so symphony x headlined instead(!!!!!!!) and made it a free show!!! i was sooo happy and during the show their was a "help out the band" tip jar so that they could maybe get some money for the efforts, well, i put in the normal ticket price and wished the band well.. well, back to the story.. it was raining and i was standing outside during the soundcheck and michael lepond walks out the door! he was kind enough to talk to me for about a half an hour and at the time symphony x was my life.. the reason why i lived ( i guess it still is) so it was an honor to talk on the same level with someone like that.. i told him how much i loved michael romeo and he said he would be out shortly. when he came out, he was VERY friendly to me and much nicer than i expected. he had a lot on his mind so we didn't talk long, but it was the niceness of MJR that counted. i complimented him and said that he was my favorite guitarist and that he changed my life, he was moved(unlike most guitarists i have met, although i had never praised them as much as MJR) and thanked me.. but when i said that he was the best in the world, he cut me off and dissagreed. i didnt want to ask him who was better than him, because that would just be annoying.. i stood about 3 to 5 feet away from him the whole show and he put on an astounding performance. when he left the stage he waved goodbye to me and that made me feel great! i left the venue as the absolute biggest symphony x fan and for the next few months i practiced and practiced my guitar untill i got injured doing it. i dont know if michael would ever remember me, but if i ever meet him againi hope i will have a prog metal band with a cd out so i can give him a copy and tell him that i play guitar over 6 hours a day because of him. - ben
