Who's Better Than Michael Romeo???

MJR is definitely one of the best guitarists for my tastes because he's really just a heavy metal fan at heart! He's not out to show off or to try to get his name at the top of any lists (although I'm sure he'd be flattered that he was there, as he should be! Ha ha). He's just writing and playing music he loves and making it available for those of us who love it as well.

I love his style becuase in a lot of the faster songs they do you can almost sense he's having fun with the solo, especially when he uses the tremolo bar or a crazy pinch harmonic. It sounds great, but the little accents like that make his playing personal rather than some guy just running scales at a million miles an hour (i.e. Michael Angelo).

I have to stop this now as I'm just babbling. MJR is my favorite guitarist for a number of reasons. And SyX is my favorite band not only because of him, but because I think all the guys in the band are awesome and the melding of them all is pure genius! Unless they were to sell out at some point I can't see any band ever taking their place at #1 in my book.

OK, enough from me! :)

Guys, I think I have a found a dead spot on my guitar: B string, fret 10.

A dead spot means my guitar sustains MUCH less on a certain note.

Have you got an idea of what could I do about it?

It's not a problem, I'm just bitching.

try readgusting the bridge hieght on your bridge with a screw. It's probably hitting a fret above it that cuts it out. Try making it higher so it stops

Doesn't help, already done that!

The fretwork is OK. I've gotten my action about 1,8 mm from the high e. I love it that way.
Are you sure the neck is properly adjusted and that it is not out of position? Are there any cracks whatsoever on the neck? It would really help to know these kind of things if we are to help you. Try consulting a luthier if you`re getting nowhere.

Well Once I got my action 1,2 mm form the high e but it was uncomfortable. I was good for legatto runs, but my bends, vibrato and alternate picking felt hard to do. Plus it had some fret buzz, but that doesn't count, I couldn't hear it over the GAIN.

Now to Harp Heaven - No, I think the instrument's pretty much fine and that dead spot is on only one place at the neck, I think it's some frequency cancelation. The neck is damn straight, so I wouldn't fuck with it.
I suppose that if I put more pressure on the fretboard, with the truss rod, I can move the dead spot BETWEEN the notes, though.
I was just being curious.

Now thats why you can shred so fast Matt! Fucking cheater if you ask me;)

Hehehe, you'd be suprised how many shredders have their action like I do (actually my tech has worked on Paul Gilbert's guitars a few times and he told me Paul keeps his action about as low as I do). :D

i dont believe its 5mm, to be able to shred u have to have low action, no matter who u r!!!!!!
His action really is that high. I checked out a few of his guitars after Mark Boals invited me to some shows in Japan on the WTEAW tour. His action wasn't always that high, but since the early/mid 90s he's been jacking it up. You do hear a bit more "slop" (well, relative slop - it's not like he sounds punk!) in his playing as a result, but he likes the added sustain it brings.

Doesn't he use really thin strings though, not to mention he is tuned down 1/2 step?

String tension can make a huge difference. If I'm playing with 10's on a 25.5 scale guitar, I need to have really low action. But If I'm playing 9's on a 24.75 scale, the strings will have low tension and I can play comfortably with a higher action.

I think Yngwie uses a custom gauge, but the E is only .8

You would get really weak sustain with an 8 on the E and low action.

8-46 tuned to e flat, and 8-48 on guitars that have the low e dropped a whole tone. On the first gig that I saw of that Japan WTEAW tour in Yokohama, someome had stolen Yngwie's box of strings made in his custom sets, so he had to do the gig with 9-42 gauge ball end (instead of bullets) as a last resort (don't know why they just didn't get the local music store to send some out). He didn't seem used to that gauge and went out of tune a lot because the gtrs were not reset, but he carried on but still tried to put on a good show (even if Mark did steal it often :D )

That really funny Connauch! ROTFL!!

PS, Mark Boals (esily Yngwie's best, and i don't even like the extreemily high-pitched singer, but mark is an exeption) sang on Trilogy(1986), Alchemy (1999) and WTEAW(2000).
