Hey guys,

My mobile phone ('cell' for the yanks) just kicked the bucket. I basically just need something new that is effective at calling and texting people... that's all. Literally just an easy keypad, touchscreen or whatever for texting, and a speaker that won't annihilate my ear when I talk. My late phone failed on all counts there.

Suggestions really welcome!

So you're asking for a cellphone that does what a cellphone does?

If you're going for a cheaper one, they're all pretty much the same. The cutting-edge technology phones are the ones with problems.

DON'T get a smartphone for casual cellphone use. Some of them have problems with the simple features because the manufacturers focus on the new and awesome things.

blackberry bold.

i own three phones... iphone4 / droidx / blackberry bold

the blackberry is the most functional of all three... by a long-shot.

For what you are asking to do the Nokia 3720 seems solid. While I've always been a Sony Ericsson guy for quite some time their new phones seem a little sketchy to me, dunno.

timislegend, I'm in the market for a BlackBerry right now. Looking at the Curve 8520 but I keep losing one ebay auction after another due to a lack of funds, haha. Anyway, do you have any experience with said BlackBerry? Would you recommend it? I'd get the Bold but that's even more out of my prize range.

Nokia XpressMusic died on me. I hated it since the day I got it. It was a birthday present. Never want to get a Nokia again.. their OS/UI is some of the most awful shit I've ever experienced. It feels like being on the Avid site.

Atm I'm looking at the most popular models:

Samsung Galaxy S
HTC Desire
HTC Legend
Nexus One

Android is killer.

Android is a multi-threaded OS whereas Apple OS is not. I find it much more powerful.

multiple threads on a phone is actually a huge disadvantage in terms of battery life.

the iphone 4 actually does support the NSObject however apple has standardized the use of this object... and one (developer) must comply to this standard in order to submit an app to the app store.

*the standard dictates the use or consumption of battery life

(droid will never support this standard because the class ref is licensed to apple with their cocoa/objective-c platform).

all droid phones are notorious for having inferior battery life to the iphone... (as are pretty much every other phone).

the newfangled question is starting to beg: iOS or Droid?

i think the droid platform has an incredible open source community... however droid users are left at that... (the support is scarce).

whereas the iOS platform invites the open source domain to a myriad of standards.

which simplifies the decision.

yes... everything about the blackberry bold is awesome.

form+function

these are crucial to me.

The 8520 isn't bad, I suppose, but the screen is pretty small (obviously) and lo-res (compared to the Bold), and in the US at least the 8520's don't have 3G antennas (though the CDMA 8530's do, strangely)

Question about phones outside of America though - here the way most people get their phones is by signing a 2-year contract to stay with a certain carrier, and in exchange you get the phone for almost nothing ($30 for an AT&T 8520, for example, or $200 for an iPhone 4/HTC EVO/Droid X, etc., and most basic phone-first devices are free); is there no such option abroad? Or are you all just paranoid about contracts?

Oh, and the Torch 9800 is an overly bulky disappointment with a sluggish processor and a low-res/low-color screen - we've gotten so many returns and complaints from customers at Radio Shack, and I've messed with it a bit myself. AVOID

Question for you though Tim: as a Droid X owner, would you say the battery life even on that is inferior to the iPhone 4? Cuz I've heard that the Motorola Droids are the sole exceptions to the Android shitty battery life rule

Yep there are such options, but my internet provider resells one of the main networks here, and there is no contract at all. The only obligation is that you bring your own phone to the table. The monthly rate is too good to pass up.
