what kind of difference in tone do you get with methods other than parallell wiring?

I'm not an expert on the subject by any means, but I know that Brian May has his pickups wired in series, and gets some SERIOUS fat tone. All of that early Queen stuff was just the geetar and different miking techniques. That's saying something about the possibilities!!
