What does everyone think of this vocal style (usually used in grind and brutal death)? You know, it's the vocal style used by bands like Guttural Secrete and Waking the Cadaver. I've definitely noticed it is becoming a popular vocal style, as it seems that even trendy deathcore bands like Despised Icon are using it in all of their songs. Personally, I don't mind it in small doses, but as pig squeal vocals are completely unintelligible I get annoyed when a band does all their vocals using this technique.

I generally hate pig squeals, but I am slowly becoming able to tolerate the bullfroggish vox the more I listen to brutal/slam shit.

I'm fine with it because I'm not a cockwad.

Is it overused? Yes.

Can it sound really well when done by someone with a modicum of talent? Yes.

constant pig squeals in a song just piss me off, I like the bullfrog vox a lot, but even then some vocalist aren't very creative with it.

A few pig squeals here and there never hurt, but when the whole song is bree bree, ugh *commits suicide*

Phlegeton's vocals are so incredibly overrated

Oh and pig squeals are completely un-metal in every aspect

No one says it can't sound good, but anyone who isn't into extreme metal will likely find them repulsive. I am, by the way, picky as I am, but still,, yet belching does nothing for me but evoke visions of clogged toilets and dying frogs.
Now, what makes one belcher talented and one not is quite a difficult issue to tackle from an objective standpoint(if at all possible), and injecting subjectivity means skewing the scales of judgement with ego. Pardon my extreme self-righteousness, mr. Pessimism.

I would say that I'm not a fan at all of either. I've yet to enjoy a band with these types of vocal. This is not to say that the vocals are always the problem as most genres using these rarely appeal to me to begin with.

The problem for me is the constant "bree bree bree" sound others mentioned in this thread. I actually enjoy deep, low pitched growling quite a bit (George Fischer, David Vincent, and Glenn Benton), even though that vocal style is nearly as unintelligible as pig squeals. I guess I at least the vocal patterns to resemble words in some fashion, not just a dude making stupid ass noises.

Despised Icon basically began deathcore as we know it, and did it best on The Healing Process, so I wouldn't call them trendy.

For some reason, I can't really get into Despised Icon. I really like Whitechapel's first and In-Quest though. Also Animosity's Empire is pretty good. I guess ill give Despised Icon another shot sometime.

Speaking of deathcore, any opinions on Divine Heresy's Bleed the Fifth? I'll be honest I haven't gave that album a spin in a while. I didn't find it bad at all.
