Please make another record like The Odyssey

What are you talking about? Symphony X doesn't care about their longtime fans..

Personally I would rather see something more conceptual such as V; however, something more like The Odyssey is still a huge step up from their latest two albums. All I can say is that I have given up hope for this band, as I don't see them putting out anything too great again unless the whole band gets involved in the songwriting process again.

It would be cool, but I doubt it will happen anytime soon. I think the next album is gonna be the same as Iconoclast or MORE mainstream, more growly. But, I mostly expect to be more of the same. Maybe the album after next we'll get a few more of the proggy elements returning, but, especially with Russell's growing prominence in Adrenaline Mob, I think we've seen the last of full instrumentals.

Hopefully the next album has at least one long song, but I doubt it will be anything like The Odyssey. Only time will tell.

So you wanna hear over-compressed guitars and snare drums and have the keyboards mixed down to hell again?
If that's the sacrifice that has to be made for better music, I'll take it. Honestly, I liked that snare sound better anyway. Had more punch.

If Adrenaline Mob has any effect on things, I would think it would cause Russell to be less interested in doing aggressive metal songs with his "other" band too. Romeo writes the music though so it probably wouldn't matter.

I think SX should make a spoken word album with Pinnella, LePond, and Rullo playing free jazz while Romeo hits diminished chords to match the syllables that Russ speaks...

Synthetic resurrection from the heart of hell...?

It sounds.....so lame!!!!!

I remember reading in the booklet that Lepond said something along the lines of being excited about King of Terrors, saying that it was going to kill live. I wonder why it isn't something they usually play.

Well, despite that I agree with you that another Odyssey-like record would be awesome, I'm not holding out for it and I don't realistically think it will happen. The band has their new direction, and they'll likely continue in that vector for another album at least.

It was a staple of the tours between The Odyssey and Paradise Lost. As far as them not playing it more recently, they probably think that their latest two albums have stronger songs in the same style. I highly disagree.

^ I highly agree with you highly disagreeing :P

Speaking of King of Terrors. Remember when some people here were freaking out about how heavy his vocals where in it when Odyssey first came out? It was a bit heavier than his norm; however, it wasn't that drastically heavy and was only one song off the whole album. Little did these same people realize what would happen on the next 2 albums..

I could see them all now going back to King of Terrors and loving the vocals! lol

Yeah, a lot of "hardcore fans" will always whine about anything a band does if it includes even the slightest deviation from the so-called classic sound of the band. It boggles the mind that this trend is present even among prog fans.

Doesn't boggle my mind. "Prog" =/= progressive/experimental. It's a genre, and genres come with expectations, motifs, and staples. People who are fans of a genre will cry foul when its borders have been breached.

That said, while the change in direction is expected and rational, I don't have to like it. I would only go so far as to say that a return to Odyssey-style music would be an improvement vector. It isn't, in my opinion, the only or the most potent improvement vector. A new direction, experimental, progressive - would really transport the band to currency.

I'm not impressed with the modern metal sound of the last two albums as it feels too cliche, too safe, and too unoriginal, however well executed.

otherwise half the thread would of not been erased.

wtf we weren't even fighting. :err:

Again with the bitching vs bitching about the bitching.

Prog fans = like prog, and less proggy = bad for them. What's so mind-boggling about that?

Also, our view is that the new direction is not moving away from the norm, it's moving towards the norm. But yeah, maybe we should all shut up and encourage the more unique variations of metal music migrating to generic modern metal.

This will probably be deleted though so whatever.
