Please tell me this is a dumb idea.

So, my guitarist suggests that we use his 6505 through my Avatar bass cab as a bass tone whenever we start to record.

Is this just a really stupid idea, an idea that can work but will yield shitty results, or what?

I've tracked guitar amps through my 8x10 bass cab (mixed with a clean DI) and achieved great results in the past. It's worth a try, but track a DI as well (and, like others have said, make sure match the impedance of the head and cab).

Well a Mesa Triple rectifier works for meshuggah

So a 6505 might be able to get you some nice tones :D

Works for the bassist of Nickelback (other way around, bass -> guitar heads / cabs)

Thanks, guys.
My guitarist is going to have an even bigger ego now... but it's okay, haha.
I've just never heard of anyone running a guitar head into a bass cab to record.

What kind of mics do you all use for bass cabs? That would be a problem for us if we actually went through with this.

If you're blending a clean DI with the amp/cab combo, any decent mic should work - you're just trying to capture the gritty tone of the amp/cab so focus on the mids and don't worry about capturing miles of low end.

I normally just use a 57. The miced sound for the bass, especially if distorted, is really only for the mid-range, so you dont need to worry about getting a super bassy mic. Fill in the lows with the DI signal.

if for some reason you don't wanna rely on the DI for fundamental low-end, it's not uncommon for bass cabs to have a kick mic in addition to something else on there, like a beta52a or audix D6
