"hey guys we should listen to more rap because, you know, its good to be into, like, a lot of different stuff"

im not new, but id like to mention some nonmetal thats been making me happy lately: ten year drought (www.tenyeardrought.com), jucifer (www.jucifer.com), lake trout (www.laketrout.com), leaves (www.leavesmusic.com)

and speaking of country, i adore this band luther wright and the wrongs. they play happy witty country and "newgrass" (banjos + drums? or something) music, and do country version of pink floyd's the wall. www.lutherwright.com they are canadian. being canadian is cool.

please check these out. none of it is elitist prog bullshit though

The brainwashery of the Opeth board is formidable!
Honestly, I have nothing against homosexuals...! 0% intolerance! I don't quite understand how that term has worked itself into my unconscious-vocab-arsenal-of-reaction, but it's there! I will totally work on amending this problem in the future!

[\I sure don't enjoy being called an Opeth-board-frequenter!]

i suppose im relatively new. lately ive been listening to hardcore and punk more than anything else, mainly because i play in a hardcore band now. At the drivie in has been in heavy rotation lately, as well as the mars volta. umm what else...i really like thursdays new album, im sure many of you here dont like them. Still rockin the new A Perfect Circle. Jeff Buckley, massive attack delerium...

has anyone else heard the new jazz album that Elvis Costello has released? its not bad, i like what ive heard of it so far.

I listen to what I want to listen to...metal or not. I feel no desire to actively try and be different to everyone else or standoutin my tastes, I just like what I like and other peoples opinions mean little to me in my decisions. I listen to more than metal, because I like more than just metal, there's lots of good music out there and I'm far from elitist...elitists are idiots. There's nothing wrong with appreciating more simple, or theatrical, or popular forms of art alongside the more underground progressive stuff. Sometimes I'm in a metal mood, sometimes I'm in a prog mood (or popular music mood, only occasionally though...bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Offspring), sometimes a power metal moodm, or a punk mood, sometimes a nice soft ambient music mood (note to self: get more nice soft ambient music)...etcetera.

Recently, I've been listening Voivod, Mars Volta, Atrox (haven't properly listened yet though), King Diamond (love the over the top vocals, keke) and Mercyful Fate.

Also, it's weird how us people who post in the Opeth OFF TOPIC section always get automatically labelled as Opeth fanboys. Opeth is just another band I like, and is faaaarrr from my favourite band...I still enjoy listening to them though, and don't mind standing up for them in an argument. In fact, Maudlin is my favourite band...you talented bastards. :(

I'm a lurker... does that count as being new?

Lately, I've been listening to a lot of post rock such as the new Do Make Say Think and Explosions in the Sky, Godspeed You Black Emperor!, 1 Mile North, Dianogah, Sackville, Fly Pan Am, Lilys, Sofa, and others... mostly bands on Constellation.

I'm also a big fan of industrial, jazz, hardcore, indie (mostly indie pop), and all of Mike Patton's bands. Estradasphere, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Fantômas, Mr. Bungle, Species Being, Idiot Flesh, KMFDM, Android Lust, Horse the Band, Refused, and Tin Hat Trio to name some bands. The only metal I've been listening to as of late is Sigh, Anubi, Sofa King Killer, and Lykathea Aflame.

Static, the only reason the Opeth board was mentioned is because capeda made a comment about "gay" bands, an epithet common to the Opeth board. It was pretty much a joke.

Oh of course I listen to more than metal!

I LOVE Opeth's Damnation and Porcupine Tree's In Absentia, open minded as fuck!

Haha...j/k...though I do like those albums.

I LOVE White Lion, Lita Ford, Asia, Accept, Enuff Z Nuff, and any other balls to the wall band!

Seriously though, I listen to some metal, the only metal bands I REALLY care about are Opeth, My Dying Bride, Agalloch, and most of Devin Townsend's projects.
I'm a massive fan of Sunny Day Real Estate and Smashing Pumpkins.

Comments about 'gay' bands are an epithet common to the Opeth board?

Hmm.

Anyways, I don't really care that much, I'm just slightly uptight. ;)

yea, 'gay' is mostly used ironically around the caht/off-topic parts, cuz of the presence of actual butt-pirates, or wannabe butt-pirates, on the board.
