Anyone heard their new album Fear of a Blank planet? I got it the day it came out (European release) and I must say it was worth the wait... it is incredible, like 5.5 stars out of 5. It has a serious undertone but is still mellow enough to meld into any environment.

I am surprised more people do not know about the band... They do some of the best art rock out there and they seem to miss everyones radar outside of the scene despite their material being very accessible, yet you have bands like Tool that lap it up doing crap mostly. Shows the benefits of coming from America vs. The U.K

Given the Steven Wilson connection, most Opeth fans should have heard of Porcupine Tree. Personally, I think that Steven Wilson was allowed too much input on his work with Blackwater Park and Deliverance/Damnation, so I hold a little bit of a grudge against him that makes me want to like Porcupine Tree that little bit less.

However, you can't dispute the quality of Porcupine Tree's work to date. With regards to 'Fear of a blank planet' I think most people will appreciate the absence of radio friendly, grunge-tinged tracks that, IMO, tainted the previous two studio albums.

Is this album any better than their others? I like some of their poppiest songs (Lazarus, Trains, Sounds of Musak, Piano Lessons, Signify, Always Never) but think their prog material is average.

^ This is a lot more traditionally progressive than the tracks you cite, though I don't think this will be a hindrance to your enjoyment of it.

hmmm...

It has a bit of an alternate metal feel to parts of it, thats what I immediately noticed, I heard it and I was like, thats rock straight away and I liked that, then the album simmered down to a kind of mellowish prog vibe before picking up again. That is what I have always liked about Porcupine Tree... they dont hack at the same riffs or the same ideas, they keep their music varied and interesting to listen to.

As far as the release date goes, it came out on the 16th in the U.K and Europe and was set to hit Japan and America on the 24th. Living in Australia when it comes to music we tend to get releases from both America and Europe depending on individual stores suppliers so I got it on the 16th release.

Couldnt have said it better myself. Variation is key. To me, no 2 songs sound alike which is very remarkable. Best of 07'! Anyone else agree "Way out of Here" could possibly be the BEST song they've written yet...the fucker gives me chillzz

I've only heard the title track and their Myspace clips. From what I've heard so far, the song that really blew me away was Sentimental. The others all sound really cool, but I think I'll refrain from further comments until I get my copy in the mail.

I always get the line "My xbox is a god to me, I flick the switch my Mum's a bitch my Dad gave up ever trying to talk to me" strangely appropriate given some people I know.

My favourite song on the album though is the epic 17:42 Anesthetize... You could easily be forgiven for thinking it was three songs it has that many changes.

significantly underwhelmed by the new album. it definitely has some good moments, contrasted by moments I can't stand. I own In Absentia and Deadwing but will be definitely passing this one up and will see what they have to offer next time around.

Fair nuff'...spoke like a gentleman for a change:heh:

I haven't once NOT spoken like a gentleman about this. look up my initial post on this album after the leak in that other thread and it's hardly anything more than what I said in this thread. the difference is there aren't childish idiots here putting words in my mouth and taking personal jabs at me just because I said I don't like the album. this happens over there though, and I'm entertained by how their trolling in favor of the popular opinion is disregarded, but as soon as I started up people couldn't stand it. it gives me a good laugh, so i do it. some people "get it" - some don't. anyway, that's that, and this discussion doesn't belong here so I'll abstain from saying more.

Love Porcupine Tree. Next time I hit the CD store, I'll get Fear of a Blank Planet. Plus, I gotta work on their discography more, since I only have In Absentia and Deadwing.
