Portnoy left DT

I too am shocked! What the fuck, Mr. Portnoy? Just a few months ago he said DT would be working on their next album in 2011 and that DT was his "baby". They also had to cancel their 25th anniversary tour this year so that he could tour with Avenged Sevenfold. I wonder if DT will go without him?

and like the others said, I thought DT's last few albums have been so bland. I saw them live in 2007 and 2009 and both times Labrie sounded like a dying cat when he was singing. I was hoping they would play Awake all the way through on their 25th anniversary tour with an encore of the entire 12 step suite but he probably would lose his voice entirely.

1. What's with the "OMG! I'm so shocked!". It's not like he died or something.

2. Nu-DT sucks anyway, and he's a huge part of it. So this may be a good thing.

The new DT is not Nu-Metal.:erk: You... lie!!!!

I'm a little sad even though I like older DT better.

They are still hitting the studio in January and touring after that.

Marwen- Agreed on both points.

Which would be a good thing,

I'm frankly amazed that he can still sing at all with his constant coke throat-drip. The man does more cocaine than you and I will ever do.

Does he really? I had no idea. I hate when people kiss his ass and say how great he is. They should see him live, it sounds like he's going to pass out any minute! There are SO many other people who could easily take his place. Jordan Rudess really bores me too. He just plays really fast.

Yeah, the guys in DT really set their standards pretty low when their original singer left. LaBrie just happened to be there as a roadie and he said, "Well I could do that". And then he was in, just like that, without the benefit of any competition.

Now their legacy is quite a mixed bag.

I thought Charlie Dominici's voice was amazing! I was so impressed with his voice that I wrote him on email a few years ago and told him. I think the other band members wrote the music without trying to make it suitable for Charlie's range. He really strained his voice trying to sing the new songs like Metropolis Part 1 and finally he just left. Not everyone has a 7 octave range! James at first had quite a nice, powerful voice but it was always a hit and miss. Sometimes he sounded great and other times, he sounded like shit!

I listened to many audition tapes from other people who tried to replace Charlie who were SO much better than James.

Example:

and my personal favorite

They did hold auditions, though. And Dominici had a great voice - the band said they wanted a less poppy singer, which makes no sense to me when you go on to write stuff like Another Day with LaBrie. On the first album, the vocal phrasing is a lot like early Fates Warning on some parts, which is more difficult and confusing melodically for both the singer and listener. So who can really be sure if it's the singer and not just the writing that took a dive?

I think they play fine, it's just you need either amazing chemistry or a mastermind to keep a band good. DT doesn't really have either.

John Arch himself auditioned for the part. But he was out of practice and the song he sang made him come off as a bad Geddy Lee impersonation. Doesn't matter anyway, any band where he didn't write the vocal parts would waste him.

I felt the same way. The band said they didn't want to sound so poppy but then it seemed like they were desperately trying to be an MTV oriented group but it just never happened. DT largely fail in my opinion because they never really seemed to have a unique, trademark sound. Every album seems to sound completely different, which seems fair enough since they are a "progressive" band, but I mean just listen to one Symphony X or Iron Maiden riff. You know instantly that it's them! If someone put a blind fold on you and put on a lesser known DT song, you probably wouldn't know what band it was until the vocals started.

Portnoy leaving is the best thing that can happen to the band.
Now they just need to get all the other guys to leave.

I love you.

Wouldn't it be interesting if he joined Avenged Sevenfold?

Port: Alright guys, I'm going to open the track with a 16/9 double time fill then cross into a mixed 8/9 and 11/8 drum beat.
Avenged Sevenfold members: No. We're going to do a chord progression of G, C, D and SOMETIMES Am and you're going to do a 4/4 drum beat throughout the whole song and only if you're luck you'll get a 3 second drum solo on ONE of the songs in the album.
Port: NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
