Yup. I know that Anthems and Nightside are the classics and probably their most memorable work, but overall I feel that IX Equilibrium is the most balanced. Emperor at their best.

Goddamn I miss those guys. You guys in the states are fuckers for getting their reunion shows. They are the only metal band left in the entire world that I want to see and haven't.

Agree/Disagree?

haha i dunno how many people you're gonna get on board with ya on this one. track 2 on Equilibrium is really awesome, but i usually get bored soon after and put something else on. Nightside is probably my favorite. the split with Thorns is really awesome too.

Yeah, I know. My taste in metal is quite possibly unique. Everything I like no one else likes, or if they do like it it's very limited. Some things I don't like (and I'm not talking about the masses, I'm talking about people educated in the metal scene) I find that hordes of people love.

For instance, my favorite Arcturus albums have to be The Sham Mirrors and Sideshow Symphonies, although I have all the old ones, I like Sham the best. IX Equilibrium is another example. Winds, while a great band, I find somewhat boring. Not BAD by any stretch of the imagination, but after a few listens I feel like I'm listening to Dream Theater with a string section. Therion's Gothic Kabbalah is an album that I dislike, whereas Vovin is my favorite. I really, really like the new Dimmu Borgir. Cradle of Filth's last decent album in my opinion was an EP, From the Cradle to Enslave. I severely detest all metalcore except for two albums: Gone Forever by God Forbid and Alive or Just Breathing by Killswitch Engage. I prefer Archetype over Demanufacture. I prefer Obsolete over Demanufacture. I prefer Colony over all other In Flames albums, not that I dislike Jester Race or Whoracle, I just think Colony is a more solid album. I don't like Converge. I don't like Kreator, except for a couple of songs. I don't like Motorhead. I'm sick of Slayer. I think Metallica's Load was the last decent album they've made, although it's still not the Metallica I want. Alice in Chains is one of my favorite bands of all time. Do you see where this is going? However, I've discovered Shining, Wolves in the Throne Room, Agalloch, I really like Elend, and I absolutely love all of them. I think Gojira have put out one of the best extreme metal albums in a long time. I'm sure I'm in the minority, if not altogether completely isolated in my musical tastes.

It's no surprise why I tend to take advice on which albums to buy with a grain of salt, but I haven't been burned by you guys, so that's good. At least it seems the things we like are in the majority.

IX Equilibrium is the first and only black metal album I've bought, unless you count At the Gates -- With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness(?title). I was not impressed, really. That is not to say that I don't like black metal at all, just that I won't pay for a CD consisting of it.

A share the same sentiments for Arcturus (I love all the albums, but The Sham Mirrors was really something, and is partially responsible for making Garm one of my favorite vocalists). I sort of feel the same way with In Flames, although I do love Whoracle just as much as Colony.
I do like some Motorhead (mostly from 76-82), but I'm not a big fan. Although I do have nothing but respect for them, since I consider them one of the most important and influential metal bands.
I think most metalheads would feel the same way about Converged. I've seen very few people praise them.

You'd be surprised, a lot of people share your preferences.

Youre right about a few things. Colony is the best IF album. TSM is the best Arcturus album.

But Demanufacture owns all other FF albums....Archetype is wayyyy behind it...

I honestly prefer IX Equilibrium as well. I can't decide whether or not I like Archetype or Demanufacture better, but I think I'd have to go with Archetype. Granted Demanufacture was what, 1995? It's still a bit stale in some parts. Obsolete I prefer to Demanufacture because it was the first album I ever bought that you could call "real" metal, way back in 1999 I think it was. Prior to that it'd just been Metallica essentially. I guess that was the album that I really got into that introduced me to the wide world of metal. I love Transgression, too. Though I think to be fair you shouldn't even compare it to the other albums. I just think it's a good album. I too am sick of Slayer, never REALLY could get too much into them to be honest. Load isn't a bad album for what it is, it just isn't the old Metallica. To be honest I think pre-black Metallica was a little over-rated even then. We all obviously know there were tons of bands doing better things than they were, at the same time.

Anthems is my favorite symphonic black metal album of all time. IX Equilibrium isn't so much symphonic black as it is more melodic black/death-y. It's a bit more accessible to me, and I think that's why I prefer it. I don't have to be in a "mood" to listen to it...I'm always up for it. With the others I have to be in the frame of mind to get into it. Nightside is really good to listen to when you can't sleep. I think it's the production that makes me drift off after a few tracks.

However, I hold Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk to be the quintessential black metal album of all time. But that's just me.

EIX is one of my quintessential awesome albums ever. Part of a trilogy!

(others being Stained Class and POE)

Melissa gets in there sometimes, too.

come on guys....anthems pretty much slays IXE in all respects. there is way more feeling in the record...like dead winter said, this is why he prefers IXE, but im the opposite and almost always enjoy albums that are "moody" to albums that are accessible....

I agree with you; all the music I listen to is basically mood music for me. I interpret it a little differently, however. I have to be in a specific mood for a certain album to enjoy it...IX is more accessible, meaning that I don't need to be in a specific mood to enjoy it. If I hear The Source of Icon E, it immediately grabs me, whereas The Loss and Curse of Reverence needs to woo me a bit more :goggly:.

By accessible, I don't mean dumbed-down. It just appeals to my immediate sensibilities more easily.
