What do you guys perfer.

Prog or shred?

For example, would you perfer a good prog band that has shit-house solo's (eg. kamelot) or a so-so prog band with absolutely killer solo's.?.?

I dont know for me yet, I'll have to think some more.

Prog forever!!! If it means that the bands labelled as prog sound different from eachother. It's not progressive if it sounds like another band.
To me anyone with a sense of imagination can be labeled as prog. Just because your band plays in 13/8 time doesn't make it a PROG band. Metallica could do that, would they be prog!? Didn't think so.

But the common thread among (good) progressive bands seems to be technicality, but that just goes with the package; if you want to make amazing music, you obviously want to do it well.

... prog without a doubt ... a good prog song from a average band can make a weak solo sound nice ... but even if you have a kick ass hyper sonic shred ridden solo but a weak song it wouldn't appeal much to me ... true it'll be nice to listen to just the solo ... but then what? ... So definitely Prog.

P.S ... Kamelot rocks!

And by the way... since when is Kamelot labeled as Prog? In my opinion, they´re nothing but Power Metal, and mediocre to boot.

What makes them better than mediocre is Roy Khan, without him they would just be another powermetal band

I voted for Prog cause shred aint everything. There have to be good riffs and song composing and not just solos. Besides shred is too showy. It says, hey look what i can do that has absolutely nothing to do with the song. If a solo goes along with the rythem of a song that really makes a guitarist stand out in my book.

What makes Kamelot better than mediocre is their producer team.

Sascha helps their arrangments and Miro writes and plays all their keyboard parts and orchestration.

Khan sang on Siege Perilious and that album sucks dick.

which is why I'll never respect Kamelot too much, because the are zeros without their producers.

What is this poll about?

By "shred" do you mean music like Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, and Racer X, where shredding is the purpose of the music; or do you mean all music that involves any shredding?

If you mean shred as in Yngwie, then I will choose progressive rock any day.

blasphemy.

he is underused in kamelot. listen to conception and you will change your mind

YES Conception is awesome. I like Kamelot more though, maybe because Comception sounds so primitive (not that that's a bad thing :) )
Khan's voice just kind of floats inside Kamelot's music when it really deserves to stand on top. You know, like Russell does...
