That is hilarious. I don't think any punk band ever tried to make a concious effort to 'strucuture' their playing. I mean, wasn't that the whole fucking point?
And The Ramones were about as 'punk' as Green Day. I mean, The Stooges, Velvet Underground, and The Damned were all on the club circuit years before. Shit, even Alice Cooper, NY Dolls and Motorhead were already getting noticed by that time.
And just around the corner, a bass player named Steve Harris was writing the lyrics to Sanctuary....
I'm soooo glad people have been mentioning Black Flag... what a band. I still listen to 'Damaged' quite regularly... the Cro-Mags, Agnostic Front, Madball, Hatebreed, Blood For Blood, Grade, Poison The Well and the like are great in my opinion too... and believe it or not, I actually like some stuff like Less Than Jake, Reel Big Fish, Goldfinger, Green Day, New Found Glory and their ilk - it's good, bouncy, energetic, instantly-accessible, catchy music for when I just can't be bothered listening to something as deep as Opeth...
