queensryche-american soldier

I have a handful of songs from the post Empire stuff and made a play list last week. It deserves more credit than I have usually given it. Its just less metal. I guess I should run MCII again, but I gave it many chances when it came out. I need to buy HITNF, Tribe and the new one... then Warning and Rage are still tapes and kinda beat.

Tate was on the metal show Sat. night, nothing special, its not dedicated and only a half hour but cool none the less. I have been wondering how he did last year singing the National anthem at some Washington football game, anybody heard it ? I tuned in for the game but they skipped the anthem ????

people seem to have a hatred towards the post promised land albums but i can't see why. maybe its because i got into queensryche in the mid 90's and never knew they were a very heavy band in the early 80's. it appears i'm the only person that doesn't really dig the album warning. it has a few really great tracks (title track, take hold of the flame, roads to madness) but the others seem very dull and almost generic to me. i think i listen to that album and OM2 the least out of their catalog

Hit the Black is the only saving grace on HINTF. A couple others - as you mentioned - You, Sign and Chasing were all good, but most sucked - they just don't stand up to their finer moments.

I do however quite like their post-Promised Land material. I used to hate it but as I get older I find myself moving away from the pre-PL material and more into their newer stuff. Probably because I've heard OM, Empire and Warning a billion times.

i too seem to listen to the new stuff more accept i still through in empire. i never got into warning and i played the hell out of mindcrime.

you don't like spOOl? thats one of the best track queensryche ever did. its weird how they always close the album with basically the best track (roads to madness, i will remember, eyes of a stranger, anybody listening, someone else, spOOl, right side of my mind). you really have to be in the mood to listen to HITNF. the album cover is what the idea is all about. ears in a jar, degarmo wanted the album to sound very sterile. even the first single camee with a qtip cotton swab to clean out your ears and listen with an open mind. its an album thats more about mood and layers and less about rocking out. i even found an interview where tate said degarmo asked him to try and not use his high register except for backing vocal tracks

anyone know the mtv unplugged setlist? i know they played
silent lucidity
della brown
killing words
i will remember
scarborough fair (maybe. i know they did a live version that was unplugged)

I have it on my iPod but it does little for me. One track I hated for the longest time was Della Brown, now I actively seek it out in a list of Ryche songs. LOVE the opening roto toms on that track in the first second of the song.

Tate was as baffled by HITNF as I am. It's just a weird sterile album. I would be fine as a DeGarmo solo album but it's just not very Queensryche sounding. Hardly any of their trademark dual guitar counterpoints or broken chords. The production was boring too. Empire or Mindcrime had exciting productions.

I wish Ryche would do an acoustic live album at some point. I've got about 20 songs through bootlegs and such of them acoustic and it always ends up sounding great.

Lady Wore Black was done "unpluged" Della was excellent, Tate really shined on the unpluged stuff I've heard, it was his vocal prime, he had it all then, his youthful range but his mature timbre, well seasoned I guess you could say.

I have three songs from HITNF and they sound fine to me.

The Warning is old... '84, so its primitive metal from a young band. It wasnt really generic at that time. They were already a bit different than many metal bands but still had the Maiden/Priest influences somewhat present. Its a staple for old metal heads at least those that took to the brooding of Queensryche.

Now when I listen Rage for Order I realize that had some hints of where Queensryche is today.

Does anybody know the vocal history of Tate prior to Queensryche ? Ever since I first heard him I said no way could he just be some smuck that decided to sing for a metal band. He always sounded professionally trained and coached as if for opera or theater. How could he have simply pulled those dynamics and expression/emotion out of the blue? No one ever sang like that before... or since as far as Im concerned. I mean you can hear a bit of Halford but the difference is still day and night to my ears. Everyonce in a while I pick up on some Bowie too and have wondered if he was into Bowie when he was young. Years ago I tried to find some kind of musical history of his youth on the net but found nothing, Its always been one of my biggest quandaries "Where the fuck did this guy come from?"........ lol

I agree. It's partly why he was such a great influence on myself.

Anyways, his history: He was trained for opera and wanted to be an opera singer. His vocal teacher (according to their 1983 Kerrang Review) was the vocal coach for Heart. He was locally known for his talents and knew of the guys in Ryche (they had done a few one-off shows with him). When they cut their demo they didn't have a singer and called Tate in. He was only supposed to be temporary but the demo became popular and they had no choice but to stay together.

Well there you go then. Ann Wilson is my favorite female rockin vocalist, she has that same in your face presence too, dripping with passion.

I did read somewhere that he didnt really want to be in a metal band.... can you imagine the world with Tate as an unknown? I get a kick on the musician discussion section when a kid comes on and askes "how do I growl" or "how do I scream"... I always feel like saying go learn some early Geoff Tate or STFU ! "Sing or step away from the microphone". lol

Theres alot of great vocalists out there but somehow Tate makes most pretty pale by comparision. Roy Khan gets the job done pretty good.

i agree. at least as far as prog metal singers go tate is the best that ever picked up a mic. not as good today as he was even 10 years ago but the man is 50 now. if you get the deluxe version of "sign of the times: the best of queensryche" you can hear 3 pre queensryche tunes by tates band myth.

rage for order is much better than warning. IMO thats the first album where the sound like queensryche. very goth sounding

Really, 3 pre Queensryche Tate songs?... cool ! I cant think of any vocalist any genre that can match Tate and Im not trying to be bias, I like many, the voice meana alot to me in music. I had to listen over and over again when I first heard him because I just couldnt believe it. It is sad how his voice has changed, many others have held up better like Dio, but then many havent held up well at all. The guy thats been singing for Uriah Heep has a hell of a voice for his age, from what I've seen on youtube.

There are some live videos on youtube of Tate last year (QR doing Killing Words) and he sounded AWESOME! Like he hadn't lost a step. There is still life in his voice, but it seems like you've really got catch him on an on night.

yes 3 pre queensryche tunes. they all have the same names of queensryche tunes but sound very different. you also get the 3 demo's from the warning album, an unplugged version of della brown, a live version of silent lucidity, a bunch of b-sides and a "brand new" track justified which is actually a song from the tribe sessions that tate and degarmo finished in 2007. the 2 disc version of this best of is basically a hits collection and disc 2 is outtakes and b-sides.
new track

You've read my mind and spoken my thoughts! :kickass:

You coming to PPUSA BTW Razor?

Shit man, I wish, especially with Fates playing, I bet I never get to see them. I just dont have the finances for it and too much responsibility.

I missed so much good music during the 90's, it disturbs me. I'd kill to see Savatage perform Wake of Magellan with Trans Siberian... now that would be a show ! In fact they should do that, Trans Sib needs a new program, a summer tour, and Wake is perfect.

Dang sorry to hear! I need someone to bitch to about growlers. Guess Wyv will have to do.

Yeah, I was stoked when TSO did a couple Savatage tunes on their latest tour, but I wanted to hear like Edge of Thorns or Jesus saves or something - who cares about the opening classical piece to Hall of the Mountain King (Prelude?). They did Believe which was uber cool.

While we're on the subject. These days, this guy is a better Geoff Tate than Geoff Tate:

Just one song to judge from but so far I'd have to say not that close. Hes hitting the notes but doesnt have the dynamics and expression. I wish the old shoddy black and white footage from some theater in I believe Seattle around 84 was still on youtube. Tate was a monster, vocally yes but he was eating up a pretty large stage like a hyper active kid on a play ground. Thats what I call command. My other favorite find was Child of Fire somewhere in Japan around 85 or so. The bridge section vocal slays. Wait let me find it....

Something should be said about Scott Rockenfield too, never hear his name mentioned when people talk drummers but his drum work is second to none.

Edge of Thorns rules, Conversation Piece, Damian, love that CD. Probably my second favorite vocalist, Zach Stevens and whats cool about Wake is Zach and Jon switching off, always loved Jons twisted one foot out of the asylumn style.... "you gotta let it gotta let it gotta let gotta let it gotta let it... got to let it go!" Actually a very expressive vocalist in his prime too, a bit shrill but songs like When the Crowds are Gone, Summers Rain showed another side.

BTW, I care about Prelude to Madness, that was Criss and Criss was awesome. I liked the stuff he wrote himself better because he wrote them like Temptation Revelation and Silk and Steel but Prelude stood out in those days.

Yeah, incredible drummer. Never misses a beat.

And regarding Tate, there's a reason why he's my favorite (and most revered) singer. The end section of En Force was incredible too. I still do vocal warm ups to that every now and again.
