Edge of Thorns rules, Conversation Piece, Damian, love that CD. Probably my second favorite vocalist, Zach Stevens and whats cool about Wake is Zach and Jon switching off, always loved Jons twisted one foot out of the asylumn style.... "you gotta let it gotta let it gotta let gotta let it gotta let it... got to let it go!" Actually a very expressive vocalist in his prime too, a bit shrill but songs like When the Crowds are Gone, Summers Rain showed another side.

I'm not big on John but I can't imagine anyone else singing Tonight he Grins Again - so maniacal. Zak: Have you heard his band Wicked Witch? (they had a song called Soul to Fire which was straight outta Queen of the Reich) - very much like Tage meets Ryche.

Some might say "who would want to?" but I would be willing to bet very few can duplicate young Jons vocals, Hounds... shit ! The ultimate "screamer" but we see what it did to his voice box. Jon and Dave (Mustaine) are about as radical as I go with vocalists and they both had that twisted approach rather than the pissed off sound. Matt Barlow is pretty impressive too.

Just one song to judge from but so far I'd have to say not that close. Hes hitting the notes but doesnt have the dynamics and expression. I wish the old shoddy black and white footage from some theater in I believe Seattle around 84 was still on youtube. Tate was a monster, vocally yes but he was eating up a pretty large stage like a hyper active kid on a play ground. Thats what I call command. My other favorite find was Child of Fire somewhere in Japan around 85 or so. The bridge section vocal slays. Wait let me find it....

Something should be said about Scott Rockenfield too, never hear his name mentioned when people talk drummers but his drum work is second to none.

yeah scott is underrated. him, zonder and portnoy are the prog metal drum gods. do you have the remastered E.P. with the live in japan audio as the bonus tracks? sounds almost studio quality.

did you like that song "justified"? i forgot to mention one opf the warning demos you get on that 2 disc set is an unreleased song "waiting for the kill"

Yes, Justified is a good song. No I dont have the EP at all. One thing that annoys me about putting unheard songs on "best of's" is putting unreleased songs on "best of's". Like you are supposed to buy material you already have just to get a screwed up order "set list" and one friggin song..... I have a thing about album solidarity so I dont like/avoid best of's.

well get the e.p. now that includes the japan concert. hell i repurchased every QR album from e.p.-q2k to get the bonus tracks on them.

i bought that best of to get the 2nd disc of unreleased tunes and b-sides even though i had most of the songs already. the first disc which is the best of (also in a single disc version) has a weird track listing that makes very little sense. this is disc 1 of the set
1. Queen of the Reich
2. Warning
3. Walk in the Shadows
4. Take Hold of the Flame
5. Lady Wore Black, The
6. I Don't Believe in Love
7. Eyes of a Stranger
8. Silent Lucidity
9. Bridge
10. Jet City Woman
11. Another Rainy Night (Without You)
12. Sign of the Times
13. I Am I
14. Real World
15. Some People Fly (should be "empire")
16. Until There Was You (should be "right side of my mind")
17. All the Promises (should be "i'm american" or "the hands")

I really liked Until There Was You. If it were my best of, nothing after Promised Land would make an appearance - maybe 1 track off OM2 and The Killer.

i like "until there was you" too but if they are representing 1 tune from Q2K it should at least be the best tune thats on the official album and not a bonus track. also weird nothing from tribe

You guys dont like Q2K do you ?

it has its moments. its not as bad as everyone says. honestly there isn't a queensryche album i dislike even though OMC2 is rather weak and probably the weakest thing they did. q2k has its highlights (sacred ground, breakdown, right side of my mind) and a few decent songs (liquid sky, when the rain comes, how could i) and the rest were filler tunes imo. oddly enough 2 of the best tunes from the Q2K sessions (howl, until there was you) were left off the album and added as bonus tracks on the new remaster which even more odd has already been put out of print after 2 years of being reissued on rhino records

i don't think its better than HITNF though

Well I would have to beg to differ about "ultimate screamer." That would go to Udo in his prime. I don't know how he has been able to keep his voice in fair shape after all of these years. Some of the vocals on the Metal Heart release were the most intense I have ever heard in my life. That little man has an iron throat.

i have the first few accept albums and i don't consider what udo does screaming. thats basically how his voice sounds. rod stewart has a weird raspy voice but he's not screaming no matter how oud he was singing. imo ron keel was the ultimate screamer;

I guess Udo is with Accept ? Im not really fimiliar with them. I know there are alot of great high singers out there. I was just talking about Olivas unusual and unique voice and technique/style that was to me anyhow... very metal. To me he was the ultimate screamer. Plant had his days too early on at least in the studio. One guy who impressed me alot was that Micheal ??? Metavich(sp lol) from Steelheart, a short lived moment of fame but amazing pipes. Still different from Oliva because he was just another of the many high singing pop metal guys, but did stand out. I will check out some Accept.

I tried King Diamond and actually didnt like the vocals and some other things so I stopped pursuing them.

Musically I think King Diamond is pretty good, but I can't stand the vocals. If they had a singer like Tate on the other hand....

Anybody else familiar with Siam's album Prayer? Tony Mills does a damn good Geoff Tate and that album sounds like it was a shelved version of Mindcrime 2 (from 1989 let's say).

udo is more like a german accented alice cooper than a high pitched screamer. i forgot about the guy from steelheart. he's still around though and sings pretty well. he did some of the vocals in the rockstar movie with mark wahlberg (sp?). also you can't leave out mark slaughter when talking about guys with high pitched screams/voices.

for some reason i always thought the vocals in savatage sounded like the singer from quiet riot but with more talent

Sorta of I guess, the Quite Riot or AC/DC kind of thing but applied to a different kind of music. Jon Oliva was apparently quite a Zepp fan growing up so he prolly did plenty of sing alongs to Whole Lotta Love and Immigrant song, ect. Theres gobs of screamers but the ones I mentioned went up there and did lyric stanza's in melodic presentation not just big ending climaxes.

I will check out some of these bands mentioned. Im limited in my purchase freedom and cling too tightly (maybe) to those bands that never did me any wrong.

Being as were talking on a progressive band topic from old school ways. I recently bought Thresholds Wounded Land and that Damian Wilson can do some awesome high melodic singing and does not have any displeasing elements to his chords at all.

The new guitarist is Parker Ludgren he's Tates son in law, the band also used the background vocalist/keyboardist from Geoff's solo band and his daughter for "Home Again" and the a drill sergent for "Sliver." Wilton now plays from stage left and played most of DeGarmo's solos.

King Diamond is the singer and it is his band, so if they had a different singer then it wouldn't be King Diamond then would it?!:lol::lol:
I love King Diamond, he's not for everybody.
His work with Mercyful Fate is fantatsic!
