I was wondering about this a week ago but forgot to ask.

You know that cliche beginning to death metal songs that has a few staccato power chords (usually 3 it seems), quick pause for a belch, and then takes off in a hyperspeed riff? Goes something like:

DUN DAN DUN!
URRGH!
dundundundnanudanudnunaudnaundu etc.

Who started that?

hahaha I know EXACTLY what youre talking about but I have no idea who started it.

just for the record, I come up with alot of death metal riffs and ALL of them start off like this

example please for us non-musicians
an alternative would be three slow power chords
like
DUUHHH DAAAAHH DUUHHHHHHHHHH
"BUH!"
*pause*
DUH!dundundundundundundundundun (galloping)

Nocturnal Wintry Riverboat were fond of that riff back in their death metal days

Aye, true, true. I just did a quick search through all the Devourment, Disgorge, Dying Fetus, etc. albums I have, but I actually couldn't find a riff that was exactly like that  This was the best I could find:

Devourment - Butcher The Weak

LOL at the vocals of Devourment ... it's like a retard trying to mouth out something.
