Question for Mike about guitar tuning on the new record

That would be kind of odd, and nu-metalish so I would assume he just meant standard E.

I like how everyone is like OMG DOWNTUNE = NU METAL when most every death metal/melodic death metal band on the planet massively downtunes. The only bands I can think of that play in A standard are like, Nile. Not Linkin Park. If you're going to associate a tuning with nu metal, associate drop B (not B standard, most bad nu metal bands are too crappy to play powerchords with more than one finger) with it. Actually maybe Nile plays in drop A cause they're pretty terrible, but hey, point is a lot of bands downtune massively that aren't nu-metal. I think the most common tuning for melo-death bands seems to be B standard (BEADF#B), and this is just the slightly lower version. They'd have to use baritone guitars to not have messed up intonation though so I'm thinking he jsut for some reason called the normal EADGBE a standard.

I'm pretty sure he meant standard E, which is handy in a way, won't have to struggle with odd tunings again to learn the new Opeth riffs, hehe.

Yeah, with my stupid floyd rose guitar I never ever felt like playing the GR stuff because of the time it would take to get in the right tuning which would then be useless for playing anything else ;_;

Standard A? what happened to Standard E?

Im not a big fan of drop D either, but I have faith in Opeths creative use of the Drop D tunings unlike other bands that drown in it like Devildriver.

I also say standard A sometimes. I think it's because that's the tone i learned to tune the guitar after. The tuningfork with the A note, the sound in the phone A etc.

And it's really annoying that people scream out NUMETAL if drop-d or lower tunings are mentioned. Bands were tuning down way before numetal was thought of.

But now we know the tunings for the new Opeth album! Thanks Mikael!
