Cool to hear the new album will be in E Standard again, the thing about altered tunings and open tunings for chords particularly is that you can use different voicing (i.e. where the notes are in the chord, what notes you double and such), like if you play a C major with the bog standard open chord fingering, then play it as a barre on the A string at the third fret, then a barre on the E string at the 8th fret, you'll notice the subtletys in how it sounds, its just how you stack the notes, with altered tunings it makes it easier to achieve different chord voicings that get away from the usual ones you get with the guitar that everybody know and use, a lot of the nicer voicings aren't easy to play on a guitar due to the layout, but are more easily achieved with open tunings and such. You can get some very nice ones just by switching down to drop D.

Most all of Emperors best stuff is in standard E, except for Prometheus in which a 7string was used, and I think Wrath was tuned to D if I remember quickly.

What'S the problem with the tuning???It doesn't make the music. I'm sure everybody here loves Bloodbath and the tuning is in A if im right. Most of the swedish metal scene is tuned in standar C or B. The tuning only get you a differant range of notes. People think that when someone downtune is to be heavier and nu-metalish. I dont see the point. Led Zeppelin were using Open C tuning and nobody complaint. Opeth uses drop D and everybody start crying. Just to say that Demon Of The Fall and Blackwater Park are in drop D. Are those songs nu-metal... I dont think so.

I like how everyone is "omg guys it's Opeth stop saying they're numetal cuz of drop D here's a list of kickass bands who tune down!!" when no one actually mentioned they had any problem with Opeth's tuning, either on Ghost Reveries or anywhere else.

Hi guys!

All but one is standard A tuning, the odd one is just a drop D. The guitars both sounds and intonates better so it was a choice from early on.
I like opening tunings though which is why I used it on some of the GR songs.

no they aren't ... not power metal, and not gayass
listen to them first, especially their latest. very nice band, becoming heavier on their latest album and incorporating some more complex structures in their music.

oh and the singer Simone is really hot as well!
