EDIT:

It plays real well, Rip Shredmohr will attest... but the fuckin thing is FOR SALE.

Throw me offers.

----------------------------------

Alright alright...

Guy gave me this guitar a few years back as a gift... now he wants to buy it back...

BUY it... Im not giving it back to him... fuck that.

Anyways, long story short:

Its a 78 with a Duncan JB and 59... how much something like that go for?

$2500? Just asking..

I might decide to sell it... Ive got a 88 ESP Horizon Custom thats my main axe anyways, and the 24.75" neck isnt the greatest for downtuning into C and what not on, too....

Could use the money on a "gently used" ENGL or VHT or something and still have $$$ left over to grab up a useable Schecter or something also...

Anyways, thoughts, opinions welcome.. discuss...

And give me an idea what I could get for that axe.

Pre 80´s Gibson worth good money, I wouldn´t sell it J, but I love the LP, no other gtr sounds like it. Whatever the price you sell it it will worth a LOT more in a few years... if it had the original pickups it would be even more expensive. Post a pic.

He gave it to me like... 3.5 yrs ago...

He wants to buy it back...

He doesnt get the benefit of paying less for it, either... thats just how it is.

I can post pics later... just wondering if you guys knew what they would go for... its that sort of translucent burgundy.

Great shape... maybe an 8... its been played, obviously... but no real wear and tear... flush mounted straplocks.

Know what? I dont know what fucking year this thing is after all... or any way to find out...

Serial is 8 digits long... BUT its not accompanied by the "Made in USA" etch...

Its got that volute, as well...

are you sure about the 1979 date? according to your serial number, your guitar was made at 12 January 2000 or 2002 and it was the 379th instrument shipped that day

Its pre 80's, according to A/Bing it against some other friends' of mine...

As an aside... it doesnt have "MADE IN USA" stamped on it, either...

So, it could actually be a 76... but that wouldnt make sense, either.

I can guarantee its not an 02 though.. I mean, my friend's had it since before then.. and likely since before 2000 too, Im damn near positive.

What it MIGHT be is a custom made Gibson... as in custom shop... custom custom... know what I mean?

the #'s just dont add up.

See? That's on 04... different set of Tuners.. its got a Gibson seal stamped in, and the etchings are painted in, also...

i stand by what i told via IM when you asked me this same question. funny, you seemed to had made up your mind at that point.... guess it didn't stick.

Some friends of mine kind of convinced me otherwise.

And just to get this dude out of my hair about it... could put the $$$ towards more gear for now.

Not like my trusty old 80's ESP Custom shop is gonna give me bad tone =)

The serial is almost always first and fifth numbers as the year, as a few people have said.

That guitar im "almost" sure is a les paul custom reissue from 2002. Alot of the reissues and special editions had funky serial numbers but i dont see this to be an exception (i.e. custom shop, sig model, limited run etc...). Also the tuners on that guitar if original should have been all metal klusson's, not grovers. Can no one else back me up here? Im not 100% of this as i've been out of the buying/selling trade as a profession for quite a while, but im about 98% sure.

I did however do some research and came up with this

http://www.goinstrument.com/Guitar/Electric/Gibson.aspx

click the link and enter the serial number. I cant see any reason why this wouldnt be a 2002.

And as far as the pic you posted above of the black LP, those exactly the exceptions i was speaking of. That guitar is a Custom Shop les paul and is noted as such on the headstock, Thats what the CS stands for. All current production gibsons have a stamped serial from 1977 on, which leaves a very tiny window for this guitar to be a '78...unless there is a run of les paul customs that all of us overlooked in the serial number research, which is certainly possible.

Im almost positive myself he had this thing before 02... thats the issue Im having with that serial... I dont get that at all.

Thinking about it...

I know for sure he had it in 02... Im quite sure he must've gotten it -before- 02... cuz I think he got it used... so I dont know... its weird... I emailed Gibson about it.

Regardless... any idea what its worth? Or at least what YOU'd shell out for it had you been in the market?

--------

One other tidbit...

Is that they said the Kalamazoo shop didnt necessarily turn everything over right on 1978 on the DOT perse... or 77.. whenever the hell it was they were switching to the 8 digit scheme...

I say this only because its still fucked that there's NO "Made in USA" etching or stamp or painting or decal or anything... anywhere...

Apparently, everything's got that.

Okay, according to Gibson's website, if that is a 70's model its a 76 and would have been the 122379 made. Now what fucks it all up is that it doesn't have Made In USA stamped on it. So either the guitars a 1976, a 2002, or its fake.

[edit: If it is a 2002, its a reissue like Axeman said (a normal Custom from 2002 would have Made In USA stamped on the back of the headstock)]
