Question - regarding 1978 Gibson LP Custom...

we had a few 70's les pauls in the shop i used to work in and also some brand new custom shop reissue type ones. the quality is so variable.

that headstock inlay is seriously shoddy, which points to Gibson, probably more likely to be recent Gibson.
It would be interesting to know of the fretboard binding covers the ends of the frets. If it does, it's likely to be a Gibbo, if not, it may have had work done, or is a copy. Those tuners aren't 70's.
I've seen Gibsons made of loads of little pieces of wood, the solid finish ones were ridiculous. Being able to have a look when the paint was removed from one of the 70's models, i saw the whitest mahogany ever. i.e. it wasn't even mahogany.

If it's a 70's Gibson, beyond reasonable doubt, then don't let it go for anything less than $2500. I'd probably say £2500 tbh, which is like > $5000 atm.

binding the ends of frets?

not sure I know what ya mean... but I think it does? I mean, there's binding everywhere, lol.

I did some research about the missing dot. Appearantly it's not that uncommon; during certain years in the 70's and 80's there simply WERE no dot over the "i". The 00 prefix in the serial suggests it's a 1976, as someone else also said.

The volute where the headstock meets the neck also points to a 70's Gibson. I have a '72 SG that I had a hard time identifying as well. Here is a link with some good info on vintage Gibsons: http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html

I would personally keep the thing, It looks like a really cool guitar and as Kazrog said it will only increase in value.

I just wanna ditch it now, cuz the guy who gave it to me is being a dick, and trying to lowball me for it for $1000.....

He literally says "well, for $2500 I can get a better axe, I just wanted it back for sentimental value, not to be frivolous... I just thought 1 grand would be fair for something I gave away..."

fuckin jerkoff. thats just ridiculous.

Anyways.

Thing is... a guitar is like an identifiable object... you hang Rhoads' and Hendrix' guitars up on the wall... you dont go "this is the Fender amp Jimi played through"... or "this is Randy Rhoads wah pedal"...

so like.. now I look at it like "this is his sentimental guitar... so fuck it, Imma sell it for what its worth" - you know, maybe half in spite, and half for the fact I've decided I could use the $$$ to buy gear that'd be more worthwhile to me right now...

new half stack, etc etc.

If you really want to sell it, just eBay it. You should set your reserve at $2500, your starting bids at $199 and watch that fucker skyrocket. Make sure to schedule your auction so it begins/ends mid-day in the US. If you can't get $2500 then it's not worth selling yet.

I own a 1976 Les Paul Custom, and the serial # is not stamped on it, it's a decal. The Tuners are Grovers, but they are tulip ends (or keystone as they are sometimes called). The bridge p/up is a Dimarzio X2N - obviously not stock (I got it used), but everything else is. Mine is the Wine Red color as well. Mine has a pancake body and is by far the heaviest weighing guitar I've ever held.

Here's a pic I took when i did some cleaning and such on it when i got it:

I have it back together now and can take more pics if needed?

Cuz the maple fretboard is GORGEOUS aweigfoaerwhiguehaiogfoaihegioh; - I have such a chubby for the look of those :goggly:

Oh yeah, ask for $3000 and let 'em talk you down to $2500, so they know they got a good deal. And then get me a birthday present, something with knobs.
