Question - regarding 1978 Gibson LP Custom...

How it doesnt look like a Gibson is beyond me...

But, Im going with Rip's ideas here, because between him and his old man... he's had his hands on like a fucking hundred Gibsons, and he's played this one, too.

It's a Gib.. I dunno what yer talkin about...

Im assuming it IS a 76... maybe an early press with the 8 digit scheme, but before the MADE IN USA stamp... its the only sensible thing.

And regardless...

Is $2500 too much? Too little?

3k? 2k?

taking votes.

The headstock inlays look rather sloppy and the i has no dot either. This is definitely the work of a drunk hippy, so it has got to be a 70's model.:Smokin:

Beauty. I'd keep her no matter what...

Does it have the binding over the frets edge?

Could be a tokai LoveRock (good guitar btw) with a revamped headstock... Haha, oh well...

good you've mentioned this. All gibsons in the history of the company after 1950 had a dot on the I, just google for every gibson pic from every year you could come up with.

so; either it just aged of, which should leave a mark somewhere
or it's a lawsuit copy of that era. A lot of lawsuits had flaws in the logo (Gibsan, Gibsun,...)

either way, you should post this on the harmony-central electric guitar forum. there are some guys over there that may just know the exact date by looking at it for 2 seconds :D

Im pretty much gonna drop it back on him... fuck it...

Could use the $$$ on a lot more shit right now, and get the guy out of my hair about it...

I mean its a shitty place to even bring it up, all things considered, so... I figure... selling it back to him... then telling him to just like, go away... thats the end of that.

Spend the $$$ on a new rig and have enough left over to grab myself a useable Schecter or ESP or Carvin or something.. fuck it.

But how much? Thats what Im trying to gauge at this point.

Doesnt seem to, Storyteller. I know theres been some issues with it in the past and some shit's been redone by some uber pro luthier in Austin who's name escapes me. But the guy who owned it/wants it back was in the know about some sort of repair in the head... so it could be that it got fucked and replaced.

The case also seems to suggest 70's. Black outside, red inside... fuck if I know.

2500 was my estimate... regardless of the surrounding mystery.

Fuck it... with that and the $$$ I've already got saved... I can get a lot more shit done with 2 more 57s, a new rig, another axe and a midi controller.

yay.

Well having the headstock replaced (which is notorious for breaking) would lower the value dramatically.

I vote $2500 if he'll pay it! Caveat Emptor (buyer beware). And make no mistake, I think it's sexy, but no fucking guitar is worth that much money - honestly, I doubt any guitar would sound better than my LTD EC-400 w/ dual 81's - sure, there are classier, nicer looking guitars, but at my present state of income, I can't see myself spending over $800 on a guitar (unless I just really wanted something beautiful :D)

Know of a good place to list this thing? HCAF? Im gonna ditch it...

Are pawn shops or GC a good place to bring it? Ebay?

i might be wrong, but i've always been under the impression that 70's era gibsons are undesirable as far as vintage gibsons go. Something about the bodies being made up of a bunch of unmatched pieces of wood. Regardless, if you can get some rube to pay you a bunch of money for it, sell the thing.

I plan on it... I just dont know where's a good place, hence my asking.

Guitar Center? Harmony Central? Ebay? Pawn shops?

Pawn shops won't probably pay you anything near the sum you'd want.

And if you're going to sell it, I think it's very important to be certain of the instrument's age. I mean, you can't really write "It's a 1976 or 2002 Les Paul" and ask for $2500.

Thanks a ton, Fredrik.

I was also looking around and trying to find some more info myself, but, its hard to uncover some shit...

Where'd you wind up catching wind of that?

So, pawn shops are out.... Ive honestly never pawned anything, so... I wouldnt know.
