Quick noob question about line out and impulses!

ive got a Peavey JSX, i want to try recording with the line out of the amp + some impulses. From what ive read you have to have a cab hooked up or a dummy load so that.. it doesn't fuck up the amp (not sure exactly what fucks up). So lets say i have my cab in an isolation booth with some blankets on it then i use the line out into a DI box then in my DAW and put some impulses on the channel? is that how im supposed to do it?

i just dont want to blow my amp up or anything ive been at a session where we did this with a jcm 900 with no cab hooked up and it blew up.

Yep, you got it. Gotta have a speaker connected whenever the amp is on.

I've run tube amps before (years ago when I really had NO clue....) without a speaker for hours and nothing bad happened (that I know of).

But you'd need a plugin to load impulses such as LeCab.

thanks!!!, the jcm 900 we were using blew a fuse but it sounds fine now that theres a new one.

im using LAconvolver because its free and im using logic

im planning on using the "catharsis awesometime fredman" as the impulses is that a good place to start?
