RANT: Crap Keyboards

I really like "Let Mortal Heroes" though, which is pretty much ALL keyboards. At least it doesn't make the pretense of being black metal.

What is the relevance of this point? Are you implying that Emperor is not black metal? Surely, their later stuff isn't, but ITNE is saturated with keyboards and it's black metal.

I think maybe he meant that Summoning isn't black metal which, at times, I believe to be fairly agreeable...

Probably. I guess I interpreted that the wrong way. Nevertheless, I'd be interested to know if he thinks ITNE doesn't constitute an exception.

Yeah me too, that's a biiiig jump whereas I can definitely see someone just calling Summoning epic music of some sort.

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHH!!!!

So, I finally succumb, and get a hold of Summoning - Oath Bound. What do I find? The same disease that stalked all manner of British bands in the early 1990's - an obsession with putting cheap, crap keyboard effects in what would otherwise be quite fine metal music. Why? For Gods sake, why? No way is a casio $99 special ever going to replicate the sound of cellos, brass instruments or violins. Metal bands: if you can't afford the correct musicians, please don't bother trying to replicate the aural effect with shite synthesisers. The end effect is rubbish.
I hates crap keyboards!

Nah, Emperor are surely black metal. The point was contexually relevant to Summoning, and how they've drifted away from black metal through each release. I was hoping they'd simply ditched the black metal approach and gone for simple epic keyboard compositions, and as a result Oath Bound was a bit of a disapointment because I didn't find it as powerful as Mortal Heroes.

The parpety-parp of a Fisher Price keyboard, probably. That aside, Anthems is most defo. a BM album. Perhaps the confusion comes from people expecting all BM to be suitably "grim" - i.e. horribly underproduced, a bass that sounds like a twanging banjo and an overall sound like a bunch of Norwegians recording backwards Venom songs in a tin shack.

I like Keyboards in bands provided used well; but I fully agree with the assertion. If the sound is attempting celo / orchestra / flute, well use those instruments not a fake imitation. Use keyboards for synthphonic or orgamental or piano sounds. Amorphis do this well
I will add to this complaint, 1 guitarist bands like nightwish, where keyboards are used to make up for the lacking instrument. Who would sell their stuff in the professional market with just 1 guitarist..?..
Oh, Bands like Katatonia (who do use some keyboards at times), who prove interesting sounds and melodies can be produced without a constant need for keyboards
