Sorry, just have to get this out of my system..

Just bought some microphones from Karma Audio, recommended by a friend. They sound pretty damn awesome for the price (on toms they're incredible), apart from the fact that they distort like a BITCH if you do anything other than whisper in them. Literally, using them as room mics they sometimes distort. Fuck is that. So now for the last week and a half I've been trying to sort this out via email with them, eventually sent one back (altho cos I'm on the other side of the world to EVERYONE shipping takes at least a week each way). Meanwhile, research has showed me that some people get ones that work awesomely on anything, but most people get shitty ones that distort all the time.

And my Beta52, which I'm finally learning how to use... I stopped recording and really only mixed until recently, bought my FP10 and want to do real drums. I got it 2nd hand, so no warranty. Now that my ears are better and I actually care about the sound, I find some weird pops and distortions and stuff.. like the mic is overloading but without any visual distortion on the waveform. Not my kick, tested it with other mics and its only the Beta52.

So I currently have TWO working microphones and am meant to be recording a band sometime next week - was planning on using 8 mics on the kit, now I'm planning on using 3 mics and the rest as triggers for sample replacement. FUck.

PS: if anyone knows anything bout mic problems, PLEASE PM me. I swear if one more thing goes wrong its going to break in two. I hope it isn't my laptop or FP10, lmao.

PSS: If that didn't seem angry enough, just imagine it all in caps.

are you sure its not your speakers that are distorting?

My trusty SM57 is picking up all these sources fine, and I'm listening on a bunch of different things. Same problem. As for the Karma mics, you can see the distortion on the waveform (REALLY badly). Beta you can't which is why I'm confused. Repair costs about $100-150 so I'm not really wanting that when I can get one for almost that cost off eBay.

Bummer man, especially since it's not only the shitty mics but the supposedly trustworthy brand-name one that are farting out on ya. Still, I feel it'd be at least somewhat applicable to say "you get what you pay for" - are there any options for rental around where you are?
