rare prog from early 70s

So, my lastest purchase is King Crimson-Thrak which I picked up on ebay for under $6 in perfect condition. Listened through it once all the way through and listening to it again right now. I am enjoying it thus far, and in other news I am fighting with someone on ebay for a copy of Lark's Tongues In Aspic. Really digging all of what I have heard from King Crimson so far.

Funny thing. The first King Crimson cd I bought was Red. When I first got it I listened to it once and that it was pretty good. Then a few weeks later I picked it back up and listened to it, and thought how much of an idiot I was for not thinking this was amazing to begin with. Are there future plans of King Crimson releasing another cd in the future or is it just up in the air? I know that Trey Gunn quit the band, but other than that seems like there is no word.

to be honest i dont really know KC's current plans or intentions. im not the worlds biggest fan of current KC output either, but i do enjoy the material from time to time. hopefully they will keep on going.

Well no shit sherlock - of course it was a generalisation. But with a voice as unique as Hamil's it is pretty hard to be merely indifferent. Especially on Pawn Hearts, both their best and least accessible ('all over the place' doesn't even begin to describe how schizophrenic this album is), which if you like, you will love, but if you dislike, you will wonder how on earth anyone could stand to listen to it.
Oddly enough, I'm listening to Pawn Hearts right now. I like it. This is the second time I've listened to it, I think. Hammil's vocals are really cool, and some of the crazy melodies/time signatures are neat.

well I posted this in the "recently bought" thread but it's probably best if I reposted it here

lately attempted to start scratching the surface of the surface of prog and related genres... have ordered/bought over 12 albums total by Paatos, Brand X, Gentle Giant, Frank Zappa, GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR, Comus, and Nektar, as well as a couple others... hopefully I've made good choices, as not all of them have arrived yet, and will definitely give them plenty of time to sink in before venturing on another purchase spree

as far as albums I actually currently have:

Brand X - "Morrocan Roll" is one I've received so far and I find it fantastic
Kansas - "Leftoverture" is another I've recently bought, one of the more famous/obvious albums, "Miracles Out of Nowhere" is probably my fav song off that, fun to play with the bass line on guitar at the 2:50 mark too

King Crimson - "Larks' Tongues in Aspic"
Yes - "Close to the Edge"
Jethro Tull - "Benefit", "Thick as a Brick"
Pink Floyd - "Meddle", "D.S.O.T.M.", "Wish You Were Here", "Animals"
David Gilmour - "On An Island" (prog or not, I enjoy it)
Rush - "2112"
Porcupine Tree - "In Absentia", "Deadwing"
Morte Macabre - "Symphonic Holocaust"

albums I own that I'm not sure would be considered prog but I think definitely share the spirit:
The Mars Volta - both albums
Radiohead - "OK Computer", "Kid A", "Amnesiac", "Hail to the Thief" - I honestly love this band

I also do indeed own countless Dream Theater albums, but I barely seem to be listening to them much anymore

the Frank Zappa compilation I ordered was Joe's Garage Acts I, II, & III... I heard "Packard Goose" and loved it, seemed like it would be very playful albums... and since there are so many Zappa albums, just have to start somewhere it seems

and Comus, I absolutely love their music style and the weirdness they bring from what I've heard (I've currently heard only The Bite and Song to Comus thus far)... are there any other bands that could be pointed out that are in the same vein as these guys in terms of the up-tempo prog folk style?

anyway I just wanted to make a post and throw a little out there about where I'm currently at in terms of beginning to explore prog... I think people are starting to fear throwing their current taste out there for the vultures to pick at, but I'll just go head on into the train, NFU's input is definitely valued

Last year, KC had intended to go out on the road with Fripp, Belew, Mastelotto, and Levin, but this never materialized due to various other commitments, or so Fripp reported on the dgmlive website. They all seem to be doing there own thing at the moment although the always colorful Fripp has said he has KC's future mapped out through 2010, whatever that means.

Cool, thanks for the info. Hopefully what Fripp said turns out to be a good thing.

Different in sound, but in spirit i always mentally connect Comus with Magma. Try the Mekanik Destruktiw Kommandoh album; if you think Comus is crazy, you ain't seen nuthin' yet.

thanks

received my GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR album today... "Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven"... only to find out the second CD wasn't in there... now I gotta go through the hassle of sending it back for a refund and ordering it from somewhere else :Smug:

my mailbox was stuffed with CDs :p Paatos - "Kallocain", Comus - "First Utterance", and Brand X - "Unorthodox Behaviour" all came in... I still have like 6 CD's on the way

there are several crazy and/or dark bands, but i've never felt the comus vibe in any of them... that image of mentally derranged people raping virgins in the forsest while jumping around playing folk music :P

btw, that vibe is lost imo, on every song outside of first utterance; even the diana ep - except the song itself obviously - no matter how good the songs may be.
