rare prog from early 70s

i was looking to get a few prog cds. i've read some of this thread, but theres no way im gonna dig through all of it. I was basically looking at releases by wigwam, gong, and picchio dal pozzo. Any suggestions there? Also, where is a cheap place to buy these kinds of cds?

the problem is there really is no "cheap" place to buy these really. except amazon, but that will only have the more standard and common releases, but thats a good starting point anyway. I wouldnt dive head first buying wigwam (although theyre a good band), id start with the big 5 bands: yes, genesis, king crimson, ELP and pink floyd, or maybe some jethro tull, etc.

theres also the fact that the much rarer bands will -usually- only be available on vinyl.

not true. theres dozens of labels that dedicate themselves purely to repressing and reissuing classic, obscure, rare, old and out of print progressive, folk and psychedelic albums. in fact, i cant think of many "essential" albums that are only available on original vinyl at this point.

however, 10 years ago would have been a different story, theres been a lot of progress (pardon the pun) made in the last few years with getting these great albums available affordably and easily to a newer generation.

Where to after that? Just start branching out into a little bit of everything?

the 2nd tier of big bands...

Caravan
Nektar
Camel
Renaissance
Gentle Giant
Premiata Forneria Marconi
Goblin

yada yada

Well, im already past the big 5. And i have mostly all of camel, a few gentle giant, a neckar album, some renaissance, none of those others.. though im trying to get my hands on some caravan, desperately. I listened to some samples of wigwam, thats why i brought them up. I really liked their sound. That italian band seemed interesting as well, from the description. I saw a couple links you put for some melotronen website and others. i'll have to check those sites out. Amazon was gonna be where i first looked though, yeah.

Edit: NFU does Dungen have another commercial release besides ta det lugnt?

any labels in particular i should look out for in terms of reissuing on CD? alot of reissues ive seen have still been on vinyl, so i guess I'm just not looking in the right places (obviously). Any suggestions would be great.

commercial release? if you mean official release...then yes. they have 3 full length albums, and several singles and an EP of unreleases material from the ta-det lungt sessions. which if you buy the USA version of ta-det lungt it comes with that EP on a 2nd disc.

man there's is so much prog out there to listen to, afte the big bands just look for other prog names you've heard of and that should be enough to keep you busy for a while, nfu's list in this page is quite goode

I missed that before, lol. I really do need to go through them all and just write band and album names down.

skim through this thread (I probably went through the first 40 pages), browse around and look up what you can at www.progarchives.com for the full song samples they have for most bands, use their user review/rating system to help you figure out what album you might want to start out with with a band, etc.
