i was looking to get a few prog cds. i've read some of this thread, but theres no way im gonna dig through all of it. I was basically looking at releases by wigwam, gong, and picchio dal pozzo. Any suggestions there? Also, where is a cheap place to buy these kinds of cds?

I wouldnt dive head first buying wigwam (although theyre a good band), id start with the big 5 bands: yes, genesis, king crimson, ELP and pink floyd, or maybe some jethro tull, etc.

not true. theres dozens of labels that dedicate themselves purely to repressing and reissuing classic, obscure, rare, old and out of print progressive, folk and psychedelic albums. in fact, i cant think of many "essential" albums that are only available on original vinyl at this point.
however, 10 years ago would have been a different story, theres been a lot of progress (pardon the pun) made in the last few years with getting these great albums available affordably and easily to a newer generation.

Well, im already past the big 5. And i have mostly all of camel, a few gentle giant, a neckar album, some renaissance, none of those others.. though im trying to get my hands on some caravan, desperately. I listened to some samples of wigwam, thats why i brought them up. I really liked their sound. That italian band seemed interesting as well, from the description. I saw a couple links you put for some melotronen website and others. i'll have to check those sites out. Amazon was gonna be where i first looked though, yeah.

commercial release? if you mean official release...then yes. they have 3 full length albums, and several singles and an EP of unreleases material from the ta-det lungt sessions. which if you buy the USA version of ta-det lungt it comes with that EP on a 2nd disc.

NFU I was reading the wikipedia page on Gentle Giant today and it said theres an album of theirs that lists 45 or so differnt instruments that were used, but doesn't say which album. Do you know which one this is? Sounds interesting.
Imo, Van der Graaf Generator is essential 2nd tier.
