rare prog from early 70s

king crimson is the only prog band that doesn't wank. not that wanking is always bad -- yes wanks tremendously, and i like them a lot... but kc is always refreshing due to lack of wanking

wow that was totally irrelevant to everything

king crimson doesnt wank? id disagree.

its tasteful flashyness id say...but i dont think you can be a tier 1 progressive rock band without wanking a bit.

@NFU: How would you classify Dredg? I'm not sure where to place them.

well dredg is a weird band for me to try to classify. which is good though...often bands that are hard to pigeonhole are great ones. theyre not "prog" necessarily. theyre not all that "experimental" either. its funny....id almost want to call them modern art rock. or maybe just "art rock". the same way bands like styx used to be. styx wasnt necessarily prog...and werent "experimenting" with anything completely original...but they had an interesting, melodic and unique aproach to rock music at the time....id say dredg does the same thing. what do you think?

That's not too bad. Makes sense to me anyways.

you cant beleive how sad this forum has actually gotten.

I agree. I don't post much anymore... Hey wait, I've never posted much.

Before, the average discussion level was beyond my contributional abilities, thus it was a natural choice not to contribute much.
Now the level is even below mine, I find myself visiting the forums less and less, and I often see how potential discussions are ruined by puerile ignorance and attitudes. This is practically the sole thread worth reading, and even this one's former wit is being replaced by this "wankery" talk :p

This is the 999th post this thread has seen. 2/3 of 999 is 666. Question is, will the devil allow this thread to live for another 1000 posts, or will we be punished for the growing chaos and lack of wit? :dopey:

Edit: Funny that this post would get the unintentional honour (which should've been reserved to master NFU) of becoming the 1000th post. However, everyone, a big hurrah for this tough-lived creation! :)

Well, im sure many people might disagree. Ive heard them called anything from post punk, to emo, to indie rock, to progressive rock, etc etc. In fact, its interesting how much the mars volta have in common with dredg....music aside. As far as hype/buzz, genre tagging, fanbase, and simply modern music tier 1 phenomenon in a music world of crap....theyre both standing out quite nicely right now.

Edit: i didnt realize this was the 1001st post. thanks everyone for making this the most successful thread in Opeth forum history (at least i think its the longest). Lets keep it goin strong.

well, we can always change that. gotten into any new bands lately?

if you havent heard them yet, check out liquid scarlet...i just got their cd...and its quite good. very...different for whats going on in the swedish prog scene right now. its like opeth moodyness, anglagard querkyness, with a sort of post punk sensibility and energy of interpol....catchy too.

anyone know when Wobbler's album will be released? or if it already has been?

Has anyone heard of Ephel Duath? I'm listening to their 2003 release The Panter's Pallete and it's amazing. Experimental metal with horns. It's really good and not just random and unique just for the sake of being different. It sounds great.

Anything in particular that you didn't like about them? I think it's great stuff but everyone is not going to share the same opinion obviously.

well i heard 2 songs. both were indeed different...and weird, but nothing stood out to me as something id WANT to listen to. it did indeed seem like material to challenge themselves more than the listener...and i beleive theres a distinct difference. so in other words...talented, and odd...but not terribly good.

I actually bought Liquid Scarlet's debut for about a month ago, after which it has been frequenting my delightful ears. I believe I mentioned it a few pages back on the thread. I actually remember that you also replied :p It is actually one of the few prog bands that is probable of ever visiting Gothenburg, the city of metal (although I'm very much looking forward to an Anekdoten concert in late summer, and will probably also see Paatos on their tour supporting the upcoming album).

How frequently do you get to see a decent prog concert in the States?

Recent additions for me:
Deus ex Machina - Equilibrismo // One of the growing number of jazz-prog bands I really enjoy.
Pierrot Lunaire - Gudrun // Non-standard italian experimental prog with an operatic female voice, quite interesting but not the easiest listen you might think of.

Taken from wobblermusic.com:
"Since february the album has been mastered as planned, and Michael Bennett has done some fantastic art work and design of the cover and sleeve. There's still no official release date, but June is a good guess. Check www.lasercd.com from time to time for the latest news on that subject."

youre just a well of information today eemu, thanks man.

sorry about going over the liquid scarlet subject again...sometimes its hard to remember who ive spoken to about certain bands, and who i havent.

as for prog concerts in the united states...very very rarely. at least in california. ive seen king crimson, rush, yes, porcupine tree, and opeth.

had i been in new york i could have seen nektar, and dungen a while back, which would have been amazing.

camel did tour california a little over 2 years ago, but it was in san francisco, and i wasnt quite 21 yet, so i couldnt have attended that venue anyway. i was extremely bummed about that.

the fact you get to see anekdoten is amazing, id kill to see them.

im also glad to hear youll get to see my friend Stefan and the Paatos crew live as well, another band ive love to be able to see live one day...ive been begging him to do a USA tour. They have been busy building a new studio as of the last few months, so theyll have a place to play and possibly record. This is good news for Paatos, but also means that a new Morte Macabre album could maybe come to fruition, seeing as the main reason a 2nd album was never done was because of the lack of recording space afterwards at the time. If that happens, ill probably shit myself while my head explodes simultaneously, seeing as Symphonic Holocaust was in my top 3 albums of the 90s.

I've been listening a lot to Tujiko Noriko; a japanese alt/experimental pop artist. Really good stuff... has garnered a lot of comparisons to Bjork(though I don't mostly agree, and I don't really like her either).
My fav. of the albums I've heard is From Tokyo to Naiagara which seems to be considered as her most accesible album. Fav. track is the brooding Tokyo Tower, which reminds me of Isis's Weight.

Very highly reccomended.
