Re Issues

Dam, this thing finally arrived today. Great re-mastering job. Artwork is deep. The cd layout has a picture of the band. The only one I recognized was Paul. I thought I was up to date with ND, but I didn't know who the other band memebers(at that time) were. After a couple of listens, I'm impressed. The female vocals are very good. They seem to add a balance to everything. Whatever happened to Mary Bielich, Cathy Jo Hejna and Eric Burnley? (sorry if this was already asked). Sasha Horn(drums) was a session musician on this? I'm sure after more listens this album will be revealed, as most good music does. A mini-review will be submitted then. Thanx, ND.

To quickly answer a few questions....

Mary Bielich continued on with us, performing on "The Knowing" and still playing occasional gigs with us through 2001. She relocated from Chicago back to her native Pittsburgh and joined up with the band Penance for a while. She's currently (as far as I know) performing with political hardcore act Behind Enemy Lines, still residing in PA with her husband.

Cathy Joe Hejna left the band shortly after the release of "Of Sculptured Ivy..." in 1999, and exited the music business entirely, from what I know. We talked with her numerous times over the following years to see about possibly working together again but to no avail. I'm not sure about her current whereabouts but I hope she is doing ok and taking care of herself, as she has had a trying life, unfortunately.

Eric Burnley played with us until the latter part of 2002, when he moved to St. Louis to move on with the next chapter of his life. He wrote and performed on the two cds that followed, "The Knowing" and "To Welcome The Fade". You might not realise that he posts here fairly often as "theNewChupe" and he even performed some keyboards on the "Pale Haunt Departure" cd. Not sure what he's doing currently music-wise (hopefully he can fill you in on that) but he's got a great family down in MO. and he's still a good friend of ours.

Sasha Horn was brought into the band at the eleventh hour to perform the drum duties in the studio for "Of Sculptured Ivy...." when things didn't work out with the previous drummer. As you can hear, his playing is excellent, and the band had asked him to stay on and continue but he declined as he already had his own projects happening that he'd put alot of time into. We still see and hear from him pretty often around town, he's a good guy and a really good musician and someday maybe we'll work with him again in some capacity.

I joined the band just as they were finishing up "Of Sculptured Ivy...", in fact I think the tape I heard of the songs was still just a rough mix when I first heard them! I regret that I didn't come around sooner as I have always really liked that cd alot and I wish I could've been a part of writing/recording it.

Wow that's a lot better answer than they left for "personal reasons" haha

Anyways, I was gonna buy both re-issues since I saw them in the cd store when I was at my uncle's house but I didn't have the money. I'll probably buy them in January.

But I heard Amid it's Hallowed Mirth and while it's very different, I liked it a lot. It's a lot more doomy. I'm gonna download Of Sculptured Icy next and see how I like it (don't worry I'll buy them soon haha) :)

A Little hint to the young & not so WISE, STOP posting on the bands forum that your STEALING their music :yell: !!??!!!!

Just downloaded To Welcome the Fade but haven't listened to it yet......and don't worry about the downloading thing when I get to NC in January I will buy a shirt and some CD's to make up for it haha

Arline - HAHAHAHA

I was just going to post the same thing.....

At least be creative and say something like, "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for the songs I rip off today...."

(Once again, prolly too young to get that reference anyhow)

I've been listening to OSIASF for the last 3 or so days. It's a strong album and a worthy addition to my metal collection. Pauls vocals(for me anyway) since that record have gotten better, deeper, more emotional and better anunciated.(man, you look young in that cd picture, right in the middle). The drumming is superb throughout. The album-proper demands your attention and draws the listener into the melencholy, and sometimes angry world in which ND were occupying. Really, not one bad song. I absolutely dig the last 3 tunes(bonus) as the production displays excellent clarity with the guitars and Pauls vocals. The entire album is re-mastered very well. Songs that captured me; Suffer the Red Dream, For every Leaf that Falls, Serenity Forgotten and Forever with Unopened Eye. I've been listening a great deal to "The Maniacal Vale" by Esoteric(album of 2008 for me) and with all it's massiveness, hallucinogenic value and incredible atmosphere, I love to listen to ND, for it has a much more personal and connective vibe going on thru their albums. ND make the listener "feel" the music, and that to me is the valuable gift ND generate. Thanx for all your hard work.

Aww who cares? If I didn't download The Pale Haunt Departure I probably wouldn't of ever heard Novembers Doom or be on this forum.

I would probably never support them or see them live. But now I am gonna drive 7 hours to North Carolina just to see them live and buy the albums I downloaded, the dvd, and a shirt.

So what if I wanted to see if the band was good? If I didn't download, I would probably never know half the bands I do now.

We care.

It's probably a moot point to try and make because frankly I'm pretty tired of discussing the downloading thing with anyone these days, and so rarely do people seem to understand my point. I'm grateful that you enjoy our band and that you are supportive of us to the extent that you are. You're planning on buying a bunch of merch and driving to see us, that's great and it's appreciated. But more to the point of what Arline was trying to say was that it's considered kinda rude to talk about illegally downloading stuff on a band's forum especially when the band themselves moderate it. Yes, I know well the arguement that downloading turns people onto new music, to an extent it's quite true and it's quite helpful. It however doesn't change the fact that there are people out there uploading our music for free consumption without our consent. And for every one of you guys who d/l'ed the stuff and then went out and bought it, there's plenty more who didn't do that, and are quite content with just taking music for free all the time. And so, because the whole illegal downloading thing is a bit of a tender issue, it's just generally considered to be "good manners", if you will, to not openly discuss that on a bands forum like this. Same goes for posting links to unauthorized places to d/l music. Neither we the band or anyone else can do much to stop the downloading, but we can control what goes on with this forum. And in a business where, speaking for myself, I haven't even made enough money in the last ten years of being in ND to buy a beat up used car, you can grant us the courtesy of not discussing how you downloaded our shit for free, even if you do eventually buy a cd or shirt or ticket or whatever. It's just a small favor to ask, y'know?

So hopefully you guys understand, and realise we're not attacking anyone, it's just a courtesy we're asking from everyone who posts here. We appreciate your support and we're glad you enjoy ND.

Also, one last sidenote-- There are currently several free songs to listen to on our Myspace page, as well as our band's website www.novembersdoom.com, lots of live clips and music videos on Youtube.com, and you can sample bits of all of our albums at places like amazon.com, napster.com, itunes.com, and so forth. So if any of you, or anyone you know, would like to "try before you buy" (which is quite understandable), please feel free to go check out the free stuff at all of the aforementioned sites. Thanks.

Yeah I'm sorry I didn't really think it was that big of a deal but I understand now. I won't discuss it anymore.

But I agree I hate when people download music and then never support the band. I plan on buying a bunch of your stuff and driving up to see you like I said. But to tell you the truth, I RARELY buy stuff before downloading. For one I can't afford it and It's basically my way of previewing before buying to see if I like it. Plus I would of never found as many bands I know now without doing it. I never really just download stuff and never buy it eventually. Those are just leechers.

For example, I bought Enslaved's Ruun album and thought it was jut OK. I didn't plan on seeing them live but then I downloaded every Enslaved album then realized I loved them after hearing their other stuff. So I saw them live, paid for my ticket, bought 2 more albums when I got there, and a shirt. So basically, they would of gotten no money from me if I didn't download their albums first.

Downloading does suck for bands though since many people just download and never ever support the band. I hate that and it sucks. I'm sorry if I lead you guys or anyone else if I did that. I won't ever talk about downloading on this forum again. :)

Yeah, we can all discuss / debate the pros and cons for the bands / fans of downloading til we are blue in the face.

I think there are enough options between a band's official site and official My space to sample a large chunk of the material without having to illegally download a full album. That's my take on the matter at least.

This is REALLY simple. If you're going to download our music for free, fine. No one will stop you. D/L it, enjoy it, support us when you can. Just don't slap us in the face, and TELL us you're doing it. People just don't see how insulting this is, when we still pay out of pocket for a lot of the things the fans enjoy, like videos.

Cool, thanks for understanding. I think (or hope) that most everyone here gets the point now. We don't need to have a big debate about the pros and cons of downloading and all that because that shit just gets out of hand anyhow.

Alright I get it...and I agree we don't cuz so many people have different opinions on it

/discussion

Now back to the topic :heh:

Could you guys say anything more about the other re-issues? The Knowing etc...
If I missed it somewhere on the forum...sorry. :)

The only other re-issue tentatively planned at this point is The Knowing. We don't know when it's going to come out, but it's in the works. With two other re-issues, a live DVD, and possibly a live cd coming as well, we want to pace ourselves! That's really about all the info we have on it at this point.
