I'm trying to create a small shootout between my two interfaces, but I have a couple questions.
First, I recorded a DI with my new Little Labs Redeye.
Then, I reamp it into my 5150 and mic up my cab. I record the signal with interface A (preamps of A into converters of A). I then record the same signal into interface B, but I want to see the difference in converter quality between the interfaces. So, preamp B into converters of A.
Here lies problem 1. interface A has Line-ins, but these do not bypass the preamp. the knob all the way down when set to line is -10dB, so I have to judge by signal level and turn the preamp for line-in up a bit to try to get it so it's not attenuating the signal. Obviously, this is not a perfect scenario, as I have preamp B going into preamp A into converter A. Is there any way around this, or a better method of testing preamp B through converter A, or am I stuck since interface A's line-ins don't bypass the preamp section?
Here's the rest of the planned shootout: Since this is a shootout, I want to keep the reampign factor consistent. I want to keep interface A as my reamping interface. I want to compare converter B with converter A. I already have preamp B into converter A, so now I need preamp B into converter B. So, how can I test interface B using preamp B into converter B, while still using A to reamp? I'm pretty sure only one ASIO device can be used at once, so I can't select interface A outputs in my DAW while using interface B inputs into the DAW.
I thought I could get around this by playing the DI with Windows Media Player instead of from the DAW. This way I can still reamp with interface A, but use interface B exclusively in the DAW. However, this created an interesting affect. Apparently the playback from WMP was not consistent, b/c if you reverse the polarity of the recorded reamped DI played by WMP, it phases with the other clips, instead of mostly canceling. What could be causing this? If you do a "null test" on preamp A/converter A and preamp B/converter A, you get a constant amoutn of cancelation, not a phaser affect. I nudge the tracks until they are at their point of most cancellation. But the reamped DI that was played back through WMP will not properly cancel with anything. Any ideas why this is happening?
I know this is getting fairly technical. I'll try to explain better if anyone needs it.
Thanks
