Reaper 4 dudes..

I think you guys hate on Reaper a bit too much...If you're comfortable with your current DAW then there's no need to complain really.

No hate from me :)
I'm a licence-holder, and have used Reaper since about version 2.

I'm losing interest now because of the whole "perpetual beta" thing, it's becoming glaringly obvious that there is no design plan for Reaper, just a mash of features that are bundled together in an in-consistent kind of way.
Whether the devs or the users want to acknowledge it or not, you need design principals operating on both the large and small scales to make a complex program work well and feel consistent.

sure, customisability is cool, but it should never be used as a substitute for good design.
In other words, customization should be an option, not a requirement.

Of course there is a design plan, what a ludicrous thing to say.

Look at all the customization they are building in... THAT RIGHT THERE!!! That's the design plan!!

I can't speak for them obviously, but it seems like they're going for the 100% customizable stance. Maybe it's so they can bundle Reaper with hardware, and a specific Reaper setup for that hardware. Maybe they're thinking... the users can design their own DAW, and share it all in one easy to deploy package.

Think Customizations for Reaper by Adam Wathan.... but just next level.

That is there design plan. And it may not be to your taste. But they do *know* what they are doing.

That pisses me off though. I'm sick of piecing macros together just to get the functionality that should be there by default...!

Remember guys - This isn't even beta, so I am sure there is a lot that's not there yet (I hope). But at this point I'm with Adam - very unimpressed so far, though, this WALTER UI engine seems promising.

Honestly I think this release was just a "STFU Userbase" measure from Cockos, since 98% of their forum is "V4" related at this point.

I completely agree with this. A simple Freeze function (which has been requested about 50 billion times) can not be that hard to implement, and no - I don't want to hack around with macro's - I want to hit a button and be done with it.

I'd actually rather feck all customisations/macros etc. If I go to a studio to track drums, I already know how to use Pro-Tools...it's the exact same no matter where you go.
Some of the Reaper screenshots I've seen have just made me wanna puke. Some people have no taste. Yes, freedom of choice and all of that, but I'll never penetrate the professional studio market for the same reason (IMO).

Excellent point...

Valid point Drew, but fortunately Reaper's positives outweigh its negatives and suits me quite well for what I do. Every DAW has a few things that piss me off in some shape or form.

That's exactly how I feel about it too. I've tried them all man... and shit... Reaper has some strange quirks, but it mostly all makes sense and gets the job done.

Right Click - Apply FX to items as new take (mono output)

is that not the same as freezing? Its been getting the same job done for me that freezing always did in nuendo?

...or is there something else that freeze does that im not aware of? I guess automatically toggling off the track FX.

Reaper is full of great ideas, it kinds of takes the best of each DAW and adds its own stuff. When I read the manual I was blown away really. Very enthusiastic. But yeah, I got bored of this "perpetual beta" feeling too. I would never record a band with it, it really isn't stable enough. Plus it has this "PC geek" philosophy behind it that I can't stand anymore since I switched to Mac. By that I mean, on a Mac, basically, (almost) everything works as it should without any customization or setting hundreds of values and stuff... On Reaper there are way too many checkboxes and value fields for buffers etc and if it doesn't work for you out of the box, you have to try every possible combination to get it to work...

Is this what the new shit is supposed to look like?
