Rec me some metal music!

Zarrix

Excellent Excellent
Im relatively new to the music and need some more metal to grow my collection.

Im mainly after
*Progressive Metal (Already got everything Opeth :kickass:)
*Symphonic Metal
*Melodic anything

Also
*Power Metal
*Doom Metal
*Death metal
*Industrial Metal

I prefer my metal not extremely heavy with a little bit of instrumental variety. Bands which simply growl and simply beat the drums and play the guitar as loudly as possible with no variety just arent my thing.

Progressive/Symphonic Metal:

Symphony X
Adagio
Andromeda
Time Requiem
Dream Theater
Mirrorthrone
Ayreon
Nightwish
Therion (Latter albums)
Russell/Jorn Lande project

Melodic Death/Black Metal:

Soilwork
Darkane
Dark Tranquillity
Unanimated
Sacramentum
Vinterland
Dissection
Astriaal
Intestine Baalism
Susperia
At The Gates

Death Metal:

Nile
Lykathea Aflame
Appalling Spawn
Cryptopsy
Death
Suffocation
Immolation
The Chasm
Aeternus (latter albums)
Mithras
Melechesh
Miasma
Psypheria
Demigod (early)
Demilich
Therion (early)
Gorguts

Doom Metal

Arcane Sun
My Dying Bride
Electric Wizard
Cathedral
Mar De Grises

I second these:

Dream Theater
Nightwish
Therion (Latter albums)
Lykathea Aflame
Death
Therion (early)
Electric Wizard
Cathedral

Especially Dream Theater, Therion, and Cathedral. Absolutely essential bands, all three.

I'm not familiar with most on Ultimate Symphony's list though.

Reccing metal (from practically every subgenre) in the metal recs thread? It's like lifting a crate of forks with a forklift.

I'm going to arbitrarily suggest Nile since we were just arguing about them in Controversial Metal Opinions. Go for Annihilation of the Wicked or In Their Darkened Shrines.

In addition,

Power Metal:

Lost Horizon
Stratovarius
Galneryus
Blind Guardian
Demons & Wizards (if you like Blind Guardian)
Machinae Supremacy
Angra
Symphony X
Iced Earth
Rhapsody of Fire
Kamelot
Helloween

I'm going to arbitrarily suggest Nile since we were just arguing about them in Controversial Metal Opinions. Go for Annihilation of the Wicked or In Their Darkened Shrines.

Arguing about what? their genre?

M-A lists seven different bands all named Andromeda. Which one?

The swedish one.

The first three in my list are the subgenres Im really after. The last 4 I'm not as fond of and would probably only like them if they fit the rule I stated at the end :)

Most of the bands I recommended are bands that have artistic value, and some that I thought would fit your requirements. As for doom metal, I can't recommend enough that you (or all of you for that matter) check Arcane Sun out, it's a gem on the rough that very few people know about.

*Symphonic Metal

Dimmu Borgir (Spiritual Black Dimensions, Stormblast, Enthrone Darkness Triumphant)
Emperor (Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk)
Bishop of Hexen (The Nightmarish Compositions, Archives of an Enchanted Philosophy)
Ancient Rites (Dim Carcosa)
Turisas (Battle Metal, The Varangian Way)
Rhapsody (Legendary Tales, Symphony of Enchanted Lands, Power of the Dragonflame)
Moonsorrow (Kivenkantaja)
Obsidian Gate (The Nightspectral Voyage)
Hollenthon (With Vilest of Worms to Dwell, Opus Magnum)
Vesperian Sorrow (Psychotic Sculpture, Regenesis Creation)
Tvangeste (Firestorm)
Therion (Secret of the Runes, Lemuria, Sirius B, Gothic Kaballah)

Also
*Power Metal

Kiuas (The Spirit of Ukko, Reformation, The New Dark Age)
Kamelot (The Fourth Legacy, Karma, Epica, The Black Halo)
Falconer (s/t, Chapters From a Vale Forlorn)
Sabaton (Primo Victoria, Attero Dominatus, The Art of War)
HIBRIA (Defying the Rules)
Pyramaze (Melancholy Beast, Legend of the Bonecarver)
Thy Majestie (Hastings 1066, Jeanne d'Arc)

*Progressive Metal
Atrox ("Contentum", "Terrestrials", "Orgasm")
Fates Warning
Sieges Even (not all of their albums are metal, though)
Watchtower
Mekong Delta (they are more of a progressive thrash metal band, but try "Visions Fugitives" and "Lurking Fear")

*Power Metal
Vicious Rumors ("Soldiers Of The Night", "Digital Dictator")
Helstar ("Remnants Of War", "A Distant Thunder", "Nosferatu")

*Doom Metal
Candlemass

The Fractured Dimension (Classical/Fusion/Prog)
Humanoid (Ambient Prog-Rock/Metal)

Best there in my opinion are Spiral Architect, Spastic Ink, Behold...The Arctopus, Andromeda, Blotted Science and the last two.
