2009 marked the year where most of my top bands had massive lineup changes and/or sound direction. The result has been I have hardly listened to metal as of late. I am really looking for hard-hitting melodic metal bands thats vocals swing towards that favor of clean.

most of the shit I listen to is:

Dream Theater - not liking their 6 song albums of 10+ minute jam band songs
Evergrey - one of the few I am still liking
Trivium - another good one (can't wait for the new album)
Mercenary - went to shit after their lineup change
Lacuna Coil - great stuff but the latest album is lacking
Norther - really liked those dudes until they got their new singer
Dimmu Borgir - can go fuck themselves (Vortex and Mustis kicked ass)
Nightwish - where the fuck is their new CD?
Children of Bodom - still bringin' it
Soilwork - where they fuck are those guys lol
Devin Townsend - legendary stuff, but can't listen to it all the time
Dark Tranquility - kicks ass, but not feeling the death only vocals
Into Eternity - Roth has had very little musical inspiration since he had a kid (the verse for every song on the latests album is the same fucking thing)
Slipknot - still kickin' ass imo

What else is out there in that vein? Really not a huge fan of In Flames, I like nightrage, but again, the death vocals only is hard to get into. Can't stand the female fronted bands (or most of them, most are very undynamic monotonous singers). I rather loath Death Metal and Black Metal, I think the only non clean vocalist band I can listen to is behemoth, which I like a lot. To summarize, I like more traditional music, I like to stay away from the novelty acts.

Seems that since most of the bands I listen to have taken a turn for the worse, I really need new material, listening to older albums over and over is getting old. Any recommendations on the more melodic clean vocal metal out there?

listen to textures latest album, some of the best melodic clean vocals i have heard in a while! shame the singer quit though :(
dude if you like behemoth then Decapitated is a MUST! the riffs.. THE RIFFS! start with the organic album if growling really bothers you, the vocalist has more of a sepultura/heavy pantera sound.
EXTOL check out synergy/blueprint. tons of singing and weird/awesome music.

I should have added Textures on to my list about a year ago when I first heard them. Totally listening to the new Ihsahn on Myspace right now. Definitely looking for less heavy clean, atmospheric metal to replace all the bands I have lost faith in.

Not quite sure what you mean "What else is out there in that vein?" But you give us a really diverse list of artists with many not even sounding that similar

try opeth? very atmospheric at times.

A few melodic bands with clean vocals:

Criminally underrated prog metal band. Check out the Momentum Shift with DiGiorgio on bass!

Horrible video, cool band. Start with Unlimited.

Similar to Mercenary, though not as good vocals. Check out the first album.

well the majority of my listening from day to day is usually, Mercenary, Evergrey, Trivium, Lacuna Coil, Dream Theater, Into Eternity, Machinehead. Just anything that has atmosphere, melodic and stays away from excessive over the top death vocals.

Would be surprised if a Sneap forumite hadn't heard Opeth.
You know, Andy did mix one or 2 of their records:lol:

heard them, yet another band that is ruined for me by the vocals. There are so many great bands out there that have to ruin their potential with cookie monster vocals, its a shame!

listen to damnation then, no cookievox.

also give wintersun a spin! they should be right up your alley!
