Shining - The Eerie Cold

01. I Och Med Insikt Skall Du Förgå
02. Vemodets Arkitektur
03. Någonting Är Jävligt Fel
04. Eradication of the Condition
05. The Eerie Cold (Samvetskvalens Ridå Öppnades)
06. Claws of Perdition

This was not the band I originally had planned to recommend, since I had hoped to treat you guys to something a bit more original and exciting. But, unfortunately, and as you probably already know, I had picked the same band as cthulufhtagn. I know some of you guys have probably heard this before, though, and for that I apologize.

This band is not particularely original. In fact, the suicidal black metal has probably been done to death now, but this band appealed to me for some reason. It may very well because of the funny spoken intro of this album where some dude in the band talks a whole lot of crap about this and that.

The album itself is pretty straightforward, but they have captured the sound they were going for pretty successfully. Screeching guitars, Shrieking vocals, so on. The bass is atually quite audible and interesting. I won't sit and here and hype this band more than they deserve though; they don't make me want to slit my wrists, but when I'm in the mood for this kind of music, and my Abyssic Hate and Xasthur cds are out of reach, this works pretty well. But please take it for what it is, and don't expect some black metal revolution or anything.

I'll try and find something more original and unknown 'til next time. :)

Highly recommended by me as well. I'd also like to point out that the intro is only available on the promo. it was removed for the retail version. Buy the album... *cough*.

I don't think this sounds much like Xasthur.

Awesome album, I was tempted to do this album myself. Although I probably would have uploaded Vemodets Arkitektur or Claws of Perdition.

Personally I think this record is really great, best Shining and when thinking similar artists, this is THE record.

Yep, absolutely fantastic album. As Lehto pointed out, the Eerie Cold is simply the epitone of "suicidal" black metal. Easily top 10 material of the year.

Between, what's with this coverart? My version look somehow like this:

Ah this is excellent. I MUCH prefer this pace of BM than blastbeat fury blarghu.

By the way, for n00bs such as myself, which other artists are considered to be "suicidal black metal"? I probably have a bunch of stuff, but didn't know they were labelled so.

much too "playful" to be labelled black metal. Besides the record is kinda meh, a harsher Katatonia. Well-done but that's it. The two first Shining albums are above that IMHO.

Harsher Katatonia? I don't think so. Katatonia's song writing is entirely different from Shining's. The former writes in a popular fashion, the latter does not.

Harsher Katatonia would be closer to Daylight Dies IMO.

Yeah I wasn't referring to "Viva Emptiness". Whatever, this Shining album is waaaay too smooth to be called black metal. But it's still head and shoulders above the likes of Beatrik or newer Forgotten Tomb, no prob.

Yes, I agree with you about Shining being too smooth to be called black metal. I think suicidal black metal is sometimes called black/doom metal...kinda stupid if you ask me.

Im a big shining fan, as you may figure out from my name, by the way the last track is called 'the' claws of perdition [/fag]

I like the approach they took in this album it sounds a lot more mature and with hellhammer drumming on this (also on the album before) adds to it nicely with a good mix of drumming.

I would have chosen a different track though either the first or second. I love the guitar solo/intro thing on the first song was a real suprise on my first listen. Made me think that something special was going to happen on this record.

I know, really, but I just had to pee when I was typing that, so I just threw out the first two suicidal black metal bands that came to mind...

And actually, I don't even own any Xasthur or Abyssic Hate cds... :loco:
