Recommendations for Epic Death Metal?

I would love to see Aeternus in a live setting. The only thing is, I'd be skeptical of the setlist. I'm much more partial to the first three albums than the last 3, although Ascension of Terror is really good. Still, I bet it would be a sight to see.

As a sidenote: I talk to a guy on another board who is friends with the guys in Aeternus, and the band members themselves told him that they would never play in the old style again. Apparently, one of the newer members doesn't like the old stuff.

Nope. Does he sign the re-releases as well? because i'm going to order those soon.
Don't know. I bought Wandering Moon and Dark Sorcery from Martyr Music Group a long time ago and both came signed by Ares.

Check out Burning The Shroud (If you don't have it). There are some songs that should satisfy you a lot. Also check this video (I can't remember the setlist, but most of the songs are from the newer albums)

If you don't have a high speed connection check this one out:

Radek maybe? Mmm I don't know, but it seems they are bringing back some of the old flare that they had. At least Ares said that they wouldn't go in a death metal route this time.

Oh, sucks. Well, i'll have to wait and see.

yeah, I have Burning the Shroud. I don't listen to it too often, because I always pull out one of the earlier albums instead.

I'll check out that video when I get home.

and Jay, my entire collection is gems. :D some just bigger and brighter than others.

If not DM, then what? I only have the first three Aeternus albums (all bought from Martyr Music and signed by Ares I believe) so I'm not sure how they evolved?

I think what Ares means is that they'll leave the brutal death metal elements behind and add more of the folk elements that they had.

Come on, "Warrior of the Crescent Moon" is disgustingly good. Music this good should be illegal. That is the best Aeternus song I've heard now - that beautiful acoustic intro is stunning, but those last few minutes of epic classical heaviness is what makes it. Epic Epic Epic!!!! Music needs to be larger than life!
And I who was going to say that if the rest of Aeternus' stuff is this good then I should get some albums pronto. Granted, these other songs I've gotten off their site are pretty good too... But this is spectacular. I've had it for a long time but never got around to check out Aeternus further.

You will dig the first three.

Before buying the band's first two, I had shrugged Aeternus off as a second tier black metal band because they were never mentioned with the vanguard of the scene, they wore corpsepaint, and they're Norwegian. But the band is so much more. Mid-paced brutal death metal with folk elements played flawlessly.

After And So the Night Became, I don't know what happened. They dropped all folk elements and became another brutal death metal band for Shadows of Old. Ascension of Terror brought back some more of the mid-paced stuff, and A Darker Monument just continued along that path. The first three Aeternus releases should be heard by all.

I'm becoming somewhat of an Aeternus fan boy. They're quickly becoming my 'Negura Bunget' of 2004. Have to say though, it's the And So The Night Became 2-CD that's really selling it to me. (The bonus CD is also very good).

I may just have to review the damn thing.

Oh and it's a shame about the albums after AstNB - had I discovered them on my own, I would have probably gone out and bought the whole catalog on a whim, but now I'm wary.

I would, but I don't have a burner. Yeah, it's not that they're bad, just don't listen to them expecting another ASTNB or BTWM. They are more straight forward, but still well above average.

Martyr Music Group has most of them for $10 p/p. If you're wary, get them from MMG for a cheap price.

Aeternus' "Sworn Revenge" is one of the most beautiful "death metal" (dark metal) songs ever. yesireebob...

Pure bliss.

Martyr Music sent me Ascension of Terror for free 'cos they delayed my order. I've yet to listen to it though. Otherwise, Aeternus are *the* epic death metal band.

I was listening to Hollenthon earlier today. Kind of like Therion mixed with Edge of Sanity.

Ascension of Terror is actually pretty damn good (def my favorite of their post-ASTNB material) if you don't go into it expecting stuff as the same calibre as the band's early stuff.

Hollenthon are good, but both of their albums seem to be half average songs and half killer fuckin' tunes. Put the two killer fucking tunes parts together and you've got a scorcher.
