Hey everyone,

I recently acquired a 5150 head, man... she knows how to growl ! :kickass:

For fun but also for some practice for one of my band's ep coming up, i've done some recording using the preamp out and testing all kinds of IRs.

My goal is to get a tone i like while keeping my recording simple such as : record from preamp out, throw some IRs, hp/lp, done.

So for this IR comparison, i used a friend's ibanez s420-wk with a bill lawrence L-500XLB bridge pick up. Strings not so new but not used either.
5150 setting's are the same stated in the jason suecof's settings thread i.e. pre gain 4.7 ; low 8.8 ; mid 3 ; high 5 ; post 3 ; res 10 ; pre 9
I also used a maxon 808 = gain 0, volume 10, tone 5 and a isp decimator g string pedal.

I then recorded two tracks 80% L & R. Drums are metal machine, no processing, just some leveling and i changed the snare to a ludwig suprasonic.

Guitar tracks are sent to a group which has a stereo Q10 with a simple hp@70/lp@15,5k

IRs used are made by JakeAC5253, because they rule. loaded with lepou cab 2. I love the metalcore B so i tried to blend it with other IRs from jake's minotaur pack

I'm curious to know which one do you like best ? What else could i do to make it better ?

Of course, please share any critic, i wish to learn more ! :worship:

I know the playing isn't tight, i rushed a bit... lack of time.

PS: it's kind of a stupid question about hp/lp but i never got a clear answer. for example if you say "hp @ 80hz" must the spectrum start going down progressively from 80hz or has it got to be 80hz on the spot like a wall ?

The official definition is like this: If you say HP @ 80 Hz, the filter-curve should cross 80 Hz with a level of - 3 dB of attenuation. Depending how steep the curve is (6/12/18/24 dB per octave), the curve starts "going down" a little higher than 80 Hz.

This is exactly correct.

I like your tones! Never thought to mix the Metalcore IRs with the Minotaurs myself. If I had to choose a favorite, I would say maybe Metalcore B mixed with Minotaur Hoof, it sounds very angry!

Try bouncing a clip using Met B and Min Hoof on one side, and Met B and Min Horn on the other :D If it sounds too wide, then just use the intermediate blend levels instead, that's why I made them like that.

i used my 5150 pre out into catharsis's new impulses for this http://www.ultimatemetal.com/forum/practice-room/845396-hello.html

they have a little bit more eq than high and low pass though but its just me taming the high end because the fx send seems to be a bit more fuzzy than what you get when it goes through the power amps

mixing some of the good irs like catharsis, jakes and gods cab can sound really good

good tones btw

Thank you RiF :)

Here you go !

Nice sound infectdsniper i forgot to try some of catharsis' impulses :D

I can't hear a difference between the metB & Hoof clip and the metb & Body clip though..
My favorite is the metB + Minotaur Horn. It has grit and balls.
Metalcore B alone is also cool.

I like all of them even raw sounding. I might lower the gain knob a tad though, as that will help to tighten the lows and bring the mids out, or alternatively you could lower the Lows knob.
