I'm recording a friend tomorrow, and he's doing this minimalist drone-doom bass thing. He's been recording himself recently with a generic cassette player, and listening to those recordings it actually sounds really good. It's definitely the kind of thing I'd want to blend into the mic signals in the mix.

So do you fellows have any advice for recording the audio from a cassette player? I was thinking of just putting it in front of an SM57 and/or my best LCD.

depending on the outputs available on the player see if you can run some rca cables out directly into your mic pre. You might need an adapter, like rca to 1/4" or whatever but if you'll get a much cleaner sound from it

if that option isn't there, headphone out
