Refusing to work with a band

Offer them drinks, food, whatever, and drug them. Take the money and dump the bodies in the everglades.

hahahahaha im so doing this...

on topic.

Like most have said, do it and edit it to death if need be. I've had loads of rehearsal demos sent in advance of a session, and they are almost always fucking aweful, thankfully they are rarely as bad as you think.

although some are worse.

My prayers are with you, good luck..

I wouldn't bother programming drums for one song. Unless you do the entire project with programmed drums that is a waste of time.

Another vote for just charging more and editing the fuck out of it here. Done it many times. Sucks but... money is money and editing + sample replacement + tuning + etc. will make it sound decent enough.

that's what I do. work can't always be fun, not even your profession of choice.
however, I still like editing better than flipping burgers or something.

Just make sure singer can sing. You can always find a way around with the other stuff. Have the singer record a demo with vocals over acoustic guitars or pre recorded material before he starts tracking. Make sure you can estimate how much time it will take aprox before starting judging by live demos. Yet, it is also a good idea to tell a band they are not ready. It also shows you are not desperate for the money.

If you're going to dislike working with the band, don't do it. You're going to get fed up with the project, and upset about it. You also will never do your best work with bands you don't love.

If the band is not talented, you must charge by the hour, period.
