IMO, you have a very open mind and you're laid back.. but you still have to be considerate with people who act in a way that is considered normal by doing what you can to make sure you're not putting them down in any way out of ignorance or something.

No one is right or wrong in this case so you pretty much have to do the smart thing and go with whatever leaves you both happiest.
