If I was going to take an album with the classic, thin 80's sound to it, what would be the best way of adding depth to it and making it sound a little bit more up to date?

I think he means the way 80's mixes were intentionally overbright because after a long vinyl period, the high frequencies the CD allowed was just too much to pass on and then there were mixes with nothing but treble uke:
I got told by a tutor at my college that snorting cocaine made your hearing more sensitive to bass frequencies and this was the reason the 80s albums by The Police were really bright. Could just be a myth though?
