How exactly is it done, and is there a freeware programme about that will let me have a go at it myself? I'm getting a fancy new computer with CD burning capabilities in a matter of weeks, and I'd like all my "creations" to sound as good as possible whatever the original source.

Basically, like Trent said... If you don't have the original mixes, sometimes you can remaster the originally mastered material if it's not up to the standard of what's being churned out now.

Mastering (basically) is really tweaking the EQ, stereo image and loudness of it all so unless you REALLY know what you're doing, I'd leave that alone 'cos you can make a fucking huge mess of it otherwise!

Having said that, if you want to try it, try Ozone from Izotope: http://www.izotope.com/products/audio/ozone/
